Grand National, Saturday 4th April 16:15
It’s the day when the whole country will be opening their wallets, purses and emptying their pockets, joining in on the office sweepstake, or taking the kids pocket money down the bookies to back the best colour coded jockey – let’s face it EVERYONE has a flutter on the Grand National! It’s mine and probably everyone’s first betting memory. I picked the winner when I was 10, Seagram at 12-1, I can still remember cheering it home and the anxious wait to see if my dad had made it to the bookies and got my pound on in time. £12 was a lot of money back in 1991!
The race has a rich history, remember the 100-1 shot (both French) winners? The horse that collapsed on the line? Red Rum’s treble (the only horse to do this) that led to him being nominated for sports personality of the year in 1977 (imagine being beaten by a horse!) The race that never even started in 1993? The names specifically tailored to get a bit more money on them -Party Politics winning in election year? Sitting in the Birch pub in Cardiff and being the only one who had not backed 40-1 Silver Birch to win… maybe that was just me!
With that in mind, let's have a quick look back over last year's Grand National from 2013, won by Auroras Encore.
Picking a winner is really a lot of luck, anything can go wrong or right over the 4 miles 3½ furlongs that is ran every year. There is no previous winners running this year who are usually always well backed, also look out for whoever McCoy is riding and well named horses that cover generic pubs or national landmarks, popular boys or girls names. These horses are likely to be well backed by the non betting public. Tea for three looks to be the current favourite who was 3rd last time round, Long Run is a Gold cup winner, Balthazar King went close last year, and Rocky Creek is also well tipped. My favourite horse this year probably won’t win it, but has been round the Grand National 5 times without falling, 13 year old Swing Bill.
Anyway with the "anyone can win it" mentality in mind a huge windfall will be being expected by the bookies in their yearly annual lottery, and because of this every UK based bookies will have some form of offer floating about on their sites and we have picked out the best below follow our grand national thread as well and good luck if you have a horse in the TGT sweepstake.
