League Cup Final 2012 - Cardiff vs Liverpool
The Premier League vs the Championship, England vs Wales, David vs Goliath, how ever Sky Sports want to big it up we’re talking about one thing, the 2012 League Cup final.
You have to go back a long time (in footballing terms at least) for Liverpool’s last trip to Wembley. The 1996 final might not stick in the mind as a display of quality football (Man Utd coming away with a 1-0 win) but you’ll be hard pressed to find a more lasting memory than the cream suits the Liverpool team were roundly mocked for wearing. So iconic were those suits that you can now have a punt on the colour of the Liverpool team suits for this season’s Carling Cup Final with cream a 25-1 shot at Paddy Power. Under "King Kenny" Liverpool have been more functional than spectacular (both good and bad) compared with the Spice Boys of the 90’s so we think the 2.5 on navy suits might be a safer bet.
Lest we forget there is also a game of football to be played against Cardiff, and whilst Liverpool are firm favourites at 1.4 with BlueSq don’t discount an upset from a Cardiff side that dispatched Blackburn and the vanquishers of Manchester Utd, Crystal Palace, to book their place in the final. Cardiff are taking on the role of underdog/giant killers/cannon fodder (delete according to your supporting lean) best priced at 10s with Ladbrokes.
When you’ve got the most expensive player in British football history in the match there’s bound to be some chat about who’s going to be scoring the goals. You can take Carroll to score at any time (please note that’s in the match, not at any point over the season). If you fancy Cardiff to get at least one then Anthony ‘cousin of Stevie’ Gerrard is an interesting proposition.
Some people say that the League Cup is barely worth winning but the added momentum an early cup win can give in the season run in is worth its weight in Gold. Just look at the way Birmingham pushed on after winning the 2011 final……ah. Or Portsmouth when they... hmmm. Well maybe losing the final gives a flagging team the kick up the backside it needs like Arsenal last season……..oh. OK then let’s just say that a cup final is a cup final, upsets can and do happen and it should be a cracking match.
Applying the faltering logic above means anything is possible over the rest of the season so Liverpool can be backed at 3.75 for a top four Premier League finish and Cardiff can be backed for promotion at 2.4 both with Betfair. Cardiff came so close last year and their fans will be itching for success this year and avoiding away days at Burnley* and 1p5wich** for yet another year.

*We at TGT have nothing against Burnley, it’s a really nice place, but it’s unlikely to be the first match you look for when the fixtures come out.
**Hailing from Norwich we do have something against 1p5wich. Boo 1p5wich. Fingers crossed this article is proven to be wrong………..not fussed whether Cardiff get promoted or not, but 1p5wich dropping down a division would certainly raise a smile.
