This could be it, not mathematically, but realistically. Man City have conspired to chuck away a huge lead in the league and could be accused of gifting the league to Man Utd. At least they could if that wasn’t so unduly harsh on this Utd team. Whilst not the best side Sir Alex will have put together, they’ve ground out results when they needed them and, at the risk of this article descending into cliché*, they know how to win when not playing well. When the dust settles on the season and the reviews are in then we suspect they might compare the seasons of two key midfielders; David Silva for City and Uniteds evergreen Paul Scholes.
The return of Scholes has coincided with Utd showing some exceptional form. He controls games, has an unrivalled passing accuracy and his legs still get him in a position to score goals. Who knows what he’ll do next season, he might take the first few months off again, then come in just in time to bring another title back to Old Trafford.
For City, their midfield dynamo Silva has also had a season of two halves, not really showing his early form and without him pulling the strings City as a whole have stumbled. It’s true he missed the company of Toure during the African cup of nations, but a team of City’s size really should have the quality to cover to a few absences, however good the players that are absent are.
What this does lead to is interesting value in the first scorer market. Either Scholes or Silva would be pretty good shouts, you can get Scholes at 12/1 with Bwin or 4/1 to score anytime at Paddy Power. For Silva as first scorer head to 188Bet for 7/1, or 2/1 anytime with William Hill. I think they’re expecting a bit of a flood of goals from City for the odds on Silva being that low to score anytime. If results betting is more your thing a full time / half time for City is 8/11 with 888Sport, or 20/21 for Utd with Bet365.
