I seen there was a discussion of a private forum with password access after the betjoint scandal. Anything in the works? I am guessing kidpoker and I are one of the few americans that post here since Doc jumped ship. I'd love to post more info on how this is still a profitable hobby for the americans but as we seen too much info in the public forum is not a good thing when it comes to certain subjects.
Sometimes I think I am in this just to prove to people that there is money to be made here if you take the time and patience to make it work. Alot of people out there think I am crazy puttin money out there on the net to do what we do thinkin you might as well kiss that money good bye! You know the type...
I have been following kidpoker since the americans had full access to the casinos. I can say you are never too old to learn and kid has taught me a few things over the years! I guess what I am saying here is allow kidpoker, Andy and the rest of us to continue to spread the knowledge here in a more discreet way and this fantastic hobby we have will never die!
Enough rattling on. Get that private forum rolling!
You are not the first person to suggest it, and there is A LOT of merit in what you say. There are negatives to it as well though. If there is to be a private forum here it will not be until the two sites TGT and TGU merge, but "may" come about then.
I am pretty against the idea, as a general rule if im not happy to have someone hear what i have said, i dont say it. But you are maybe the 14th to ask about it in the last week!
Have a plan and stick to it
I'll leave any comment on how appropriate a private forum is to Andy, it's his show... I just work here
However I can comment on how best to technically organize something like this using the forum software:
Doing it this way is preferable over having a password protected forum for various reasons, main ones being:
- Start a new thread about the promotion on the main publicly visible forum - basically a 'leader' or 'teaser' thread if you like to let people know that it's on and that if they're an active member of the forum then they can take part in it. Make it clear that under no circumstance should details of any specific bets be discussed on that thread and if necessary delete them if they crop up - harsh but given the shitstorm after the last one, worth doing IMO (in fact probably better just to close the thread and say people have to PM the organizer to take part).
- If an active member of the forum reads that thread and wants to take part, they'd PM whoever was organizing the promotion (say Kid). From there Kid or an admin would then add that user to a specific forum usergroup that only contains people who are part of the promotion. IMPORTANTLY though whoever was organizing the deal would have to vet that user seriously IMO to make sure you don't get anyone dodgy coming onboard/that that user is definitely a good guy.
- Once that user has been added to the usergroup, they will then be able to view a 'private' forum which is only visible to users in that usergroup - anyone who's not part of that usergroup won't be able to see the private forum.
- if you update the password you have to let everyone know which is a pain
- if someone leaks the password then it's a pain
- also if you use a usergroup you can easily contact everyone doing the offer via a mailing list aimed specificially at that usergroup.
But... well this all takes discipline and planning. It is a hassle to set up, but as the forum grows and more people hear about it who are nothing to do with the forum, the risk of people ruining things for legitimate active users of the forum increases. And any more fiascos like the recent ones will only damage TGT's credibility...
yeah if you get a sportsbook wants to advertise at your forum they would ask whats in the private forum?? I understand the negatives of it. No perfect solution here. I always worry I say too much on these public forums on certain subjects that it might hurt the fellow gambler more than help.
I wouldn't be doing what I do now if it wasn't from the wisdom I came across on these open forums. I guess we all need to use good judgement in knowing when we cross the line..
Keep up the great work Andy. Maybe we can steer more americans this way again. The more ideas in a public forum the better.
good stuff Munk! I always go back to the phylosophy KISS "keep it simple stupid" I'd say continue getting these excellent bonuses for forum members and if anyone has questions on how to properly maximize the bonus have a list of people that can be contacted on PM to help the newbie out. Kidpoker, Andy and Munk can't do it all. Just delegate it out to trusted members of the forum. I would be more than happy to be a member of the elite list!
I think Munk's idea is definitely a good start, even if Andy wants to fine tune it slightly. Given the Betjoint debacle, I think we do need to vet who gets the information, otherwise there's the possibility that every good offer TGU gets leads to mass gubbings.
I see Andy's point about not saying anything that you wouldn't want people to see, but I don't think that's the key issue. We need to try and prevent gnomers and their ilk from ruining the bonuses from those who want to use it legitimtely, and the only way to do that is to limit access.
Well I'm more than happy to arrange the usergroups side of things and maintain the forum permissions. It could probably be easy to allow individual promotion organizers access to the usergroup as well to add new users to their list.
As I see it it's a trade off between having no regulation / system in place to keep control over who signs up to these promos and potentially losing all credibility with a lot of books when it inevitably goes wrong OR imposing some kind of order as above and keeping out abusers / gnomers who have nothing to do with TGT and keeping things sweet with the various books. Well, somewhere in between those extremes anyway
Like Tom says, it's not really so much an issue of not having anything to hide from the bookies, it's more about hiding the goodies away from the gnomers and abusers from outside the forum. The irony of them being able to read this is not lost on me either...
OK well as a trial we have a freeroll poker tournament set up for early March with 100 Euros prize money, it should be fun. Details have not been put up yet but is that something you think should be kept in the private bit? IE only offers that forum members who conribute stuff should be able to enter? If someone wants to set it up then by all means i just think it would lead to things being cliquey perhaps.
But if enough people want it i would never stop it, Munk can be in charge he is better at that stuff than me. I would suggest there is no rush to set it up yet though, and it would be a good idea to decide from the get go what its purpose is for?
Have a plan and stick to it
The problem you have with setting up a private forum is that whoever was doing all the gnoming probably has an active profile here and they will still post now and then to remain active so they can pounce on any new offers. Shame these d*cks have to ruin things- I've been away in Vegas and was looking forward to doing this offer on my return. Don't suppose there is much point in joining them now if I'll just get the acc closed.

The details are a major PITA though, Kid wouldn't have to post his affiliate links in public, they'd have to be in the private forum... but then all it takes is one person to post the link publicly and the private forum is useless...
So now I don't know... it's tricky.
