Buying a netbook
I'm thinking about buying a netbook that i saw on HUKD:
£179 - Dell Mini 9, 8.9" Display, Intel N270, 1Gb Ram, 8Gb SSD, Wifi, B'tooth, Webcam, Linux. 48hr sale! - HotUKDeals Forum
I was thinking about buying it, then trying to make back the cost by using it to place arbs during the day when i wouldn't normally be able to place them.
what's everyones opinions on MBing using small screen netbooks? Possible, or not worth the hassle?
I personally wouldn't do it, I find it hard enough on a 23" monitor let alone on a 9" screen!
However I can give my opinion on a netbook my Auntie bought recently - the Samsung NC10 - absolutely cracking bit of kit and I'd highly recommend it. When she said she'd bought a netbook off QVC I was a bit sceptical to say the least, but I happened to have a 'Which Laptop' magazine at the time and the NC10 got the best rating out of all the netbooks they'd reviewed. Definitely deservedly so as well, since having had a play with it a few times now, it really is an excellent machine...
Was a little larger than I was expecting, maybe the size/weight of an 'average' hardback book I'd say... really well made though, decent quality build and the keyboard is just the right big enough to touch type with.
I'm sure the Dell would probably be very good though, I'm typing this on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which I picked up at Xmas for £350, also very impressed with this and don't regret buying it for a second...
Only possible issue is that the OS is Ubuntu, there might be problems with some Casino applications perhaps. There was a thread on MSE recently about 'match betting on linux' or something like that that highlighted any issues. Nothing to stop you putting XP on it though of course...
I've got my eye on the Aspire One A150X, Windows Xp and 160GB HD added for £249 at amazon at the moment.
Looks funky in blue too.
Of course I don't 'need' one but given I've made that this week already don't I deserve one?
I've been thinking the same (having seen the deal earlier), and paired with a 3g dongle, it might be portable heaven. However, the screen really does put me off. I do all my stuff on a 13" MacBook, but I think 9 or even 10 inches is too small of a screen, with bookies, betfair and spreadsheets all flying about. Hence, it might be OK for the odd arb or maybe for browsing TGU when at work () but I wouldn't rely on it do any serious arbing. Casino offers might be another thing, but it might get boring since the screen can only really display one thing at a time.
Having said that, the Samsung NC10, the Dell Mini 9 and Acer Aspire One (roughly in that order) are all solid selections. The Dell can even run a hacked version of OSX
I have a Acer one. They're great for sofa-surfing, but really not very good for betting on the move. The screen estate is way too small, and the keyboard isn't ideal either.
I have a 3G dongle also (three mobile) and the coverage/speed isn't great around my way. I've heard better things about t-Mobile, so may try out one of those.
Cheers for the replies guys.
Was mainly going to use it to place arbs as and when they appear on mbassist, the arb thread etc, not really going to do heavy duty arb hunting on it.
I think it might just be my way of trying to justify an unnecessary impulse buy!!
My missus just got the acer one from amazon (in pink obviously), it's pretty slow but o.k for surfing and a light use.
Get Windows rather than Linux if you can. The Linux version was a bit cheaper but would have been a pain in the arse for most betting apps, betdaq trader works fine though.
Plus the Linux one wouldn't work with her 3G phone so look at stuff like that.
& if you've got fat sausage fingers forget about one of these, you'll hit 5 keys at once!
I've got my eye on an Acer Aspire One too. My main (and only computer) is a Fujitsu Lifebook P7010, so I'm used to small screens (10 inch)
Have to agree with the general opinion that they are to small.
I brought an asus eee pc with 8.9 screen and it was just to small.
Another thing to consider is the size of your fingers!
I found myself hitting 2 keys at once as the keys are so close together.
Whatever you do dont buy an Iphone. I got one and it took me weeks to manage to send a text message quicker than if I hand delivered them a letter
