Horse Racing - Moral Concerns?
I've been in a bit of a dilemma for a while now on this and indeed do not bet on NH races as I see them as more hazardous than flat races. Obviously means I miss out on some promos like recent Will Hill BOGOF which is irritating, but I was able to do the sign up as it doesn't involve betting on Cheltenham.
However, I'm also having doubts about flat racing, partly because I'm not sure how much truth there is to issues like horses being sold on to dealers and then slaughtered for their meat once they've finished their careers. Also, whether a lot of horses are put down before they ever get to racing because they're not good enough. I found the website animal aid quite disturbing along with horsedeathwatch where I was surprised to see relatively recent deaths on flat racing.
Anyhow, I'm wrestling with whether I should bet on any form of horse racing at all now tbh as I hate the idea of making profit if it means cruelty to the animals - especially such offers as "refund if your horse falls".
Sorry for waffling on, but anyone else ever feel this way?
Edit: Just realised that I posted this in the wrong section - should be "day to day life". Sorry.
If you dont like possible slaughtering of Horses, never investigate greyhounds!
pandora's box is open lol
Totally agree that people should have concerns if they are being treated cruely ... but if killed humanly for food after then thats a whole other debate (vegitarianism etc)
Im from a farming backround (but im pretty anti farming - hate the destuction, intensive farming, chemicals etc involved) so see things in a different light
Look at the UK ... how many horses would there be running round wild if they werent kept as pets/race horses .... they'd be pretty much extinct so they actually get a life because of us
The only time i really disagree is when a horse is put down and it could have a life after - if they were wild they would still get injured limp around in pain before starving to death or being eaten
If you really want to do something good MSE giol forum has a charity thread for goodwood .... do your betting and give a larger % of profit from any horse racing you do to that ... at the moment your stance of not betting isnt doing anything really (though i understand where your coming from)... with that charity you can do way more good betting than your doing not betting .. more money means more horses can get a better quality of life - the more money the charity gets the more high profile the more profile the injured etc get the sooner anything wrong with the sport gets help (if the charity manages to make fake legs for horses seeing how ever many fake legs horses there could be in the country side would do more good publically - im sure ive read somewhere a horse on 3 legs cant walk so one of the reasons they are put down)
also as a side note you might want to research low fly zones for the airforce where you are and nationwide ... i know of atleast two people who's horses have had to be put down after planes etc have flown over caused them to bolt and they got injured in the fields they are normally safe in
Would you rather more troops died in iraq etc because they cant be trained?
(were in a war there so forget the whole should we shouldnt we be there thing)
on the opposite side of that theres about 50 horses running wild wild on my nans farm (in a low fly zone) that have been rescued by some nice women who rents the land ... cruelty to races horses should be way lower on the list of priorities its just because they are more high profile they get more reports.
Only an idiots would be cruel to a race horse .. some humans natural tendencies causes way more cruel things to the ones kept as pets which is a bigger and less reported/known thing
Want to save cruelty to any animals kill any that have anything to do with humans and let the ones that survive in the wild live as they would have with out us ... but then you got the whole extinction, do you help when injured etc debate
Want to do more good for animals ... set up reserves and donate more money (humans ruin everything natural usually)
not a rant just first thing in the morning thoughts
Not meaning to make too light of this because it is a very serious issue and I do hope horses are treated properly etc - but when I was horse arbing I always felt a lot better underlaying the horse to only make a profit if it won because it meant I could actually cheer the horse on to win rather than only ever cheering if the horse fell!!! Just not right cheering or being happy when your horse falls or just doesn't win...
Yeah, I can't bring myself to do those offers where you find a few good matches and then actually hope the horse falls so you get a refund.
Honestly didn't mean to do any preaching here, just I've been thinking about it a while and wondered what other people's views were.
didnt think you were preaching just incase ... and i did check out the sites (crazy numbers really - and some of the points look v dodgy ... putting a horse down because its lame .. that should be fixable even if it cant race again by any competent vet ... though with sites like that you have to take it with a pinch of salt as its a biast to a certain degree at the end of the day)
honestly hadnt given the thought to the if a horse falls refunds and the repercussions to the horses - my opinon hasnt changed but will definatly consider a bigger donation and skipping the if it falls offers to from now .. so atleast some sort of good(?) has come of the thread
I am of course aware that my not betting on Cheltenham etc won't make any difference to the horses as there will always be punters - it's purely a personal guilt thing hehe.
Obviously up to each person to make their own decisions. I was just curious if anyone else had similar thoughts. Wasn't my intention to convert anyone
Edit: Shall check out the MSE charity thread.
Personally, i bet on Horse races without even considering it. I have read the website you mentioned just now for a bit but i still dont have a problem betting on it, even the refunds on a faller offers, the horse is going to fall whether you bet on it or not.
I have thought about it before with the Grand National actually, watching them go round and crossing my fingers at each fence slightly holding my breath hoping they go over OK. It isnt actually a "cruel" race though like is sometimes made out. A fair few horses will dismount the riders, pick themselves up and keep on going round the course anyway, as far as they are concerned they are out for a run with their mates!
They are not being forced to go round, and if anyone thinks you can actually make a horse do what it doesnt want to, just with that tiny* whip, you have never tried to make a horse do what it doesnt want to!
*Tiny vs the horse, you could make ME do anything if you hit me with it, but to the horse it isnt a big deal.
Have a plan and stick to it
lol i mentioned im from a farming backround ... i will happily climb over a fence into a field with a bull, a load of rams, swans etc and have no problems meeting new strange aggressive dogs (though did slightly pap my pants when i found out one of the dogs i was sitting for a friend of a friend was a working police alsation) ... but horses ... now they honestly scare the life out of me (even the ponies) ... sod trying to take a horse to water and make it drink if it doesnt want to lmao
I do feel quilty.. the other day I bet on a horse and it fell badly and was shot..i felt very sad.. would of been terrible if i had been willing it to fall..
I also bet on the greyhounds and I remember there was that story about that man that shot thousands of dogs,... I'm a veggie and love animals .. a big moral dilemma.. but I bet on both...
