I bought an HP touchpad in the fire sale recently and use it for betting/browsing now I've put android on it.
Can have multiple sites open using dolphin browser as well as excel spreadsheets on a decent 10" screen. Wouldn't go for anything smaller than that as it you could end up matching off the wrong thing.
You can pick up an advent vega from currys/eBay outlet occasionally for £130 if you keep your eye open.

I would also recommend the Samsung Galaxy W. You can still buy it in Carphone Warehouse sim free for 249 quid. Get yourself a Giff-Gaff unlimited internet pack for 10 quid a month and you´re away.

Don't be put off by the low price of the Orange San Francisco, folks (which is actually an Orange branded ZTE Blade). Pay under £90 for it, unlock it using a freely available unlocking utility, and install Cyanogen Mod 7 (Essentially that is Ginger Stir Fry 2.3.7) and you have a stunner of a phone for the price, comparable (almost) to the HTC Desire in features (Pretty much the only thing it won't do as well at is 3D games). They must be selling this thing at a big loss to gain market share and reputation, although getting rid of the Orange-branded dog of a version of Android the thing comes with is a must, so you need to put in a very small amount of work. Doing that gets you a machine that is going to do most of what most people want, and will take in its stride any betting needs.
With O2 payg I get 500MB of data allowance and thousands of texts if I top up my credit with £10 a month (that £10 is then available for calls), or you can pay £3 a month for 100MB of data a month (more than enough for betting needs).

No offence but had the san fran and now got HTC incredible and you cannot compare the two. The processor just wasn't up to the job on the san fran. Ok i could use bf mobile but a lot of bookies mobile sites although accessible hardly ran. All I can say is having a decent Android/3iphone is like having a laptop in your pocket. Same can't be said for budget phone.

Fair enough, and I see your point, I felt the same when I first got the San Fran, but the implementation of Android that Orange put on the thing is just plain vandalism, and was a serious handicap! After I flashed it with CM7 it was like night and day, so much more responsive and my comparison with the HTC Desire is a real side by side one. I don't know anything about the incredible, but I don't doubt that it will be much better, but with CM7, the Blade is very usable. I also own the Galaxy S and a few months in the battery life is utter crap, even worse than crap if you leave the WIFI with auto-sync on. The phone itself is fantastic though, I just have a couple of extra spare batteries.

Yeah flashed mine although never got rid of all the Orange crap so perhaps didn't do the best job. It broke now Certainly good value for the money, but if your serious about betting on your mobile need confidence your phone won't freeze on you at wrong time costing you $$$. That's why I think its worth shelling out a bit more.

Flashing the rom should completely replace the old system with a new image, so there's something very strange in what happened to yours! I don't get any of the freezing that I got when it was still Orangified, so the screen works and scrolling is very smooth etc. You make a good point - I woudn't get the OSF if you weren't prepared to flash it - but the process is pretty easy.
