PAYG sims expire
Just a throwaway post but may be of use to some people.
I recently discovered that PAYG sims expire if you don't make a call on them for a certain period of time.
Last Christmas I bought my Dad (technophobe of the first order) a PAYG mobile. On trying to use it recently (for the first time) it came up with a Sim error.
I didn't think much of this at the time.
I keep a cheap-as-chips PAYG mobile in the glove compartment of my car. Although I usually carry my mobile on me, there are occasions I may simply hop in my car & nip off & for that reason I thought it sensible to always have a cheapo mobile in there. The other day I took it out to make sure it was still in working order & got the same sim error message.
Hmmm. That prompted a bit of googling & sure enough it appears that pretty much all PAYG sims will expire (taking a tenner credit with them both times on these occasions) if you don't make a call. These were Tesco (actually O2) Sims & I gather you need to make a call on that network every 6 months to avoid this. I don't know the expiry times on other networks but my googling around suggested they all have them & that some are shorter than 6 months.
Simple theft on the part of the networks IMO, but at least if you're aware of it you can take steps to avoid it. Luckily I never found out the hard way, in a breakdown somewhere in the middle of snowville.
So if you do have PAYG mobiles lying around, make a diary entry that you need to make a 10p call on them every few months.
Thanks , this is of interest to me as i have a pay as you go phone about 5 months old never used it , appreciate the time you went to post this .
