Your Matched Betting Career
This thread could be a complete waste of time and a bad idea but on the other hand (and hopefully!) it might provide a bit of inspiration to new people starting matched betting/casino bagging and also people who have been at this lark for quite a while.
It's basically a thread to let people know how you started, why you started, how much you expected to make, how much you have made so far, how much time you put in to this etc. It might drop like a stone and if it does then fair enough but hopefully people will post their thoughts and experiences and if it can help others in the long run then great. Please note, I don't want this to turn in to a gloating thread!
I'm nearly 28 now and started matched betting 2 years ago next month. I always enjoyed a gamble in my younger adult days and would often end up in a bookies after work sticking £10 of my shocking wage on this horse and that horse. I liked to think I knew how to read horse form but I really didn't! It was nice when the winners came in @ 10/1 or more but they were luck and few and far between.
I have always gambled, mainly on football and the horses. I would say though the year that led up to me starting matched betting I was probably very, very close to "having a problem" when it came to betting. I would bet a tenna here and a tenna there on a team I had never heard of or what country they came from. I racked up about 1k on my credit card through betting too. Pretty serious stuff really. I never told anyone, not even my partner (ex now) as I thought I was ok becuase I could still afford to pay all the bills, the mortgage etc and 1k was easy enough to pay off. Luckily that's when matched betting turned up and I finally managed to discipline myself and get my head sorted. It's weird really because if I hadn't started this a couple of years ago god knows where I'd be now. Probably in loads of debt through gambling I'd bet!
I was a regular on a football forum and on this certain day someone had posted up a thread detailing how to make £20 guaranteed profit from a casino game at Coral. I signed up, did what this guy had detailed to do and 5 minutes later I was withdrawing £40 back to my card. WOW I thought! How easy was that!?! The same chap put a thread up a few days later roughly explaining what matched betting was and that he would be putting more threads/posts up in the coming days showing how to extract free cash from bookies with minimum risk. Rather stupidly I went along with it (I didn't know the guy from Adam - I'm glad I did now though!) Once I'd made £100 over a week and grasped the concept I knew I was on to a winner. Sure I've made mistakes (plenty of them and still do ) but if I hadn't have gone along with those few threads 2 years ago I'm not sure I would have ever known about matched betting and I would be in a mess now.
2 years later I'm still going strong. Sure I've had my lulls and breaks where looking at figures on a computer screen for hours has sent my head blank and in need of a break from it all. I would be hugely surprised if anyone doing this for the same amount of time as me has never had a break of at least a week/fortnight from this. I find a shirt break every now and then can really recharge the batteries and once you get going again you can't wait to get your teeth in to another offer. Discipline is the key for me though. Discipline has enable me to hit through the 12k barrier at this game. That figure includes casinos (which I have branced out in to this year) some other risk free/very low risk games/casino offers, free bingo scratchcards etc but in the main the 12k is from matched betting. I dipped in to the profits to purchase a new pc last year and a new plasma tv just before Xmas. I'm still working with well over 10k of float. The credit card was paid off soon after I started and im in a position now I never thought I would be in as my 2 year "matched betting anniversary" aproaches. I initially thought I would make about 1k MAXIMUM from this, enough to pay my credit card off at the time, so looking back now on everything I have done really does bring a smile to my face.
I have no idea how long I will continue with this for. My current partner is expecting out first baby in July so any free time I currently have matched betting (which is probably an avergae of about 5 hours a week nowadays) will probably be cut very short when wiping arse and changing nappies takes over! Still, I'd like to plod on, make a bit here and there whenever I can and use any further profits as treats for me, the missus and the new arrival. It's nice to know I've got that 10k in the pot anyway to help us along because I'm sure the first few years of parenthood will be difficult for us both so that cash may need to be dipped in to every now and then.
Matched betting has made a huge impact for me though. I never mug bet anymore. I've disciplined myself so much so that I don't think I ever will. I like making guaranteed profit too much!!!!!!
Anyone else got any little stories they would like to share? Either how they got in to matched betting or along their matched betting career? Be interested to read people stories, memories, thoughts etc.
Nice idea for a thread, Iíll add my experiences as hopefully it will spur me on to have a solid two weeks of earning before I stop doing this for a while.
I started my advantage gambling career back in 2004 after starting to play online poker and discovering the huge potential of the weak low limit games and the vast amounts of poker bonuses that cleared quickly and were near enough always available! Became a member of a poker and casino orientated bonus chasing forum at some point in spring 2005 and was amazed at the amount of money people were making purely from the casino side. In comparison to today, some of the bonus offerings were truly unbelievable, being at university at the time, a few hours a week doing casino bonuses allowed me to live comfortably and build some cash up on top! Poker took a back seat, and I hit the casino bonuses very hard during summer 2005, making myself a very nice sum in the process!
Things continued to tick-over through the rest of 2005 & 2006 making steady amounts per month for not too much effort. Around this time I also discovered matched betting, but didnít really do much of it. It really did seem to me back in mid 2006 that casino bonus chasing days were numbered and that things had been getting progressively worse, but there were some notable exceptions. Paddy Power introduced a new monthly casino bonus (I think in the Feb of that year) that lasted no more than a few days Ė it was 300% to £300 with a 12x Bonus wagering requirement and I think all games were allowed Ė that must have cost them a lot of money!
I stopped doing anything except for the occasional poker bonus for around 12-18 months for no other reason than it no longer seemed profitable! My re-discovery of advantage gambling also came from a post on a football forum where someone detailed a couple of games/casino codes for Coral. Did those, read over the concept and havenít looked back since. Iíve been matched betting full time since July last year (due to graduating and no-one wanting to give me a job!) Iím now in a situation where Iíve got accounts at an awful lot of bookmakers and have certainly made more than I could have envisaged when I started up again.
Iíd like to offer my thanks to all at TGT for the wealth of information thatís available, and also for proving to me that casino bonuses are still profitable! It helps that there is such a good atmosphere here compared to other forums.
Iíve now got just over 2 weeks until I spend 8 months travelling the world so I am intending to hit everything in sight to maximise my funds!
I've been doing this for six months and have made £1750. Not as much as I hoped for but I'm only doing it about 4 hours a week and I've got some bookies on hold for Cheltenham.
There is loads I still got to learn, aka, arbing, dutching, doing handicaps, spread betting, US books so hopefully in another 12 months I will be fully up to scratch with most of you experts here.
You are so right, there is always other avenues to explore, things to learn and offers to do. I have never dutched when matched betting. I have never done any spreadbetting offers. I have only a couple of times done offers such as "If so and so scores get a refund on all losing markets". I have never done any US books. I keep meaning to explore all these options but I now find my time to be quite limtied as to what I can do so it's usually just sign ups, re-loads and the odd casino offer nowadays. Really should read up on these things though!!!

It began around 2003/4 when I was at University and there were shop bookmakers offering freebets, I was doing an Economics degree and had been taught about arbitrage and saw that you could bet on all three outcomes across them all to make a profit. They were my first ever "matched bets". Did that a bit and then discovered Flutter, which made things MUCH easier, and started betting at a few online bookmakers too.
Then that petered out and I finished Uni, went home got a job. Then quit my job and noticed one day whilst unemployed on the Betfair forum (Betfair had merged with Flutter by now) a thread about Casino Bonuses. Somebody showed me how to make about £100 in less than 10 minutes. I was hooked, and went on to do A LOT of Casino bonuses. I stopped looking for another job.
Around late 2005 early 2006 started this website. As time went on the focus on matched betting grew more and more, and I started delving into that again. Did pretty much everything possible fairly full time for 2007 Bookmakers and Casinos. Some time early 2008 this website merged with an US forum (TGU) and I was introduced to some VERY smart US guys and I made a lot of money from US style bonuses in 2008, that was probably my main source of income that year.
2009 did a bit of everything still but now spending much more time working on this site and the admin side of it and doing affiliate type stuff, I still gamble, but nothing like to the extent I once did.
2010... Who knows.
As long as A) I am enjoying myself and B) I am making money I will keep on going. If ever either of those things stops then I will quit.
Have a plan and stick to it

Very interesting read that Andy. Always wondered how and when you got this site up and running.
absolutely superb post andy
i'm still learning after just over a year matched betting ... which i stumbled upon totally by chance as i did not gamble previously at all... i didnt even put on a lottery ticket... & still dont
ive now done a few casino bonuses .... but casinos scare me ... so im currently looking at all the variance stuff & graphs, etc. to try to ensure i win at casinos... maths & numbers are strong points for me but ... as i said these casinos still scare me to death... ive made some stupid mistakes at casinos but overall im up on EV... but luck has played a part in that
i started out thinking... "this matched betting thing looks too good to be true but if i could even win £1,000 within a year that would be fantastic"
i must admit i find this forum a real source of inspiration, knowledge & experience.
Great opening post.
My story is quite simillar actually.
(wrote with the aid of a bottle of red and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, so apologies for any mistakes)
Messed about for ages with various chocolate coin systems. ( I call em chocolate coins because theylook great, but look a little deeper and peel of the surface and they are just full of crap). Just lost cash eventually, but enjoyed the crack. But ended up costing a fortune.
Got utterly p****d off with my job of running sports centres for an absolute tosspot of a company (Barnsley Premier Leisure). Mrs was expecting our first child and I was travelling too much ( wasnt gonna live in Barnsley ever.....) so, maybe not a wise decision, but left and set up my own business tiling kitchens bathrooms etc.
Needless to say it didnt work out and cost me quite a lot of cash inthe process. I thought I was keeping myself afloat by trading tennis untill an absolutely disasterous end of season WTP tourny cost me my years profits. ( stupid and not too proud to admit it). But the hardest lessons are the ones you learn from.
Then found Matched Betting via MSE and apart from the odd daft mistake and lapse haveent looked back really.
I started off (like the OP) just trying to pay off a my credit card, hoping for a quick 1k.
However, about 10 months later, I am now back off to Uni doing Teacher Training starting in sept. and am now relying on MBing to help fund it.
I still have loads to learn and spend far too much time on the PC, but at least I am making cash....
If you don't mind me asking, what went wrong with your tiling business? I ask only as starting my own ventures is something that is always on my mind and I am interested in finding out as much about the failures as the successes.
Of course, if you do not wish to talk about it (which would be understandable), I won't mind in the least.
"Pay no attention to what the critics say. No statue has ever been erected to a critic."
Probably best to PM each other about that if you want to talk about it otherwise this thread will go off topic pretty quickly.
