Hey I watched that the same night you mentioned it, had meant to check it out cos I read about it in the reviews and it was supposed to be good... was very good wasn't it, up there with the best documentaries. Like the bits about how wars are usually called on certain drugs as a way to keep one section of society out of work (by locking them up!?!) - first with the Chinese back in the 19th century(?) (with opium), then with the Mexicans (was it?) with Marijuana in the 50s(?) and later Crack/black popolation in the 80s/90s, all to keep those peoples out of the work pool and to stop them taking up white jobs. (Actually wasn't put across quite so dramatically, I'm probably making it sound much more 'white power' than they put it, it was actually a lot more subtle than that).
Also was surprised at that 100 to 1 law re Crack vs Cocaine (you used to get a sentence of 100x more for Crack related offences than for (powder) Cocaine). Also that only 13% of crack users are black but black people account for 90% of the crack related cases that go through the courts because of profiling. Madness.
But yes brilliant documentary, definitely recommend it if you like a good documentary. David Simon (The Wire creator etc) does a star turn.
edit: lol @ that nfl bad lip reading clip. excellent.
Also just finished series 4 of breaking bad - that is one seriously brilliant show - gutted series 5 is not out here till june. Can't recommend it enough, up there with or maybe even better than the wire and the sopranos etc for me.
Hehe talking about tracks from Breaking Bad, the last thing I watched on Youtube was to do with Breaking Bad:
Not sure exactly where it was used in Breaking Bad but when I searched for it recently on Youtube (actually after hearing it on Gilles Peterson's show) it seems to have featured on BB at some point. Brilliant song, can just imagine it being on Breaking Bad somewhere, fantastic sound track they have on that show.
Re season 5 - I think season 5 continues (ends!!!?!) later this year doesn't it... not sure when it starts up again, it 'broke' for Xmas after 4-5 episodes or so and is due to continue probably in Spring ("Fall" ). I think anyway. Won't give it away if you've not seen it but the way it 'broke' was brilliant, can't wait for it to start up again.
I've actually bought the first few seasons of it now for a few people I liked that show so much, seems pure madness that it hasn't aired on terrestrial (or even Sky) in the UK. Apparently (and I'm quoting from distant memory), the rights were bought by FX and/or channel 5(?) a few years ago in the UK but for some reason they decided not to air it. Criminal.

I'm not into conspiracy theories but it was put across so well that I thought it plausable. Anyway you look at it though poor Americans are getting an extremely rough deal. The land of the free eh? I'm not so sure.
Wilko is a local legend round here . I havent listened to this yet but I've read a few of his recent interviews and he has an interesting take on life/death. Very sad but he's facing up to it extremely well.
