    Volcano's erupting

So I have some friends stuck in dublin because of these volcano's erupting. All airlines going out of there are shut down. Anyone live around there or know much about it. Their phones dont work there so cant talk to them much since their interet access is limited also. Just would like to know more about what exactly is going on with these volcano;s

All UK and Ireland airspace closed to all flights so guess they will be stuck for a while.
I guess when its reopened it will take a while to clear the backlog.

The BBC link below may give you an insight.

The volcano is in Iceland so your friends are 100% totally safe thats not a problem.

It is all a bit overkill if you ask me and the airlines have been doing "test flights" which have shown no problems so hopefully it will be back to normal soon. Certainly as your friends are in Dublin and presumably want to fly West to the US, and the cloud of ash started in Iceland and has been going South East, that should not really be a problem.
Have a plan and stick to it

The 'over-reacting' thing is a bit tricky. Plane manufactures are quite clear: don't fly if there is ash. Imagine the outcry from the media if a plane went and crashed.... Money over safety, bonuses first.... etc.

Or put it another way - hands up all those that want to take a plane that has say a 1000 fold* chance of crashing because of the ash?

*bear in mind that he chance of a crash is phenomenally small in the first place...

I think this is one of the main reasons for the airspace shutdown:
British Airways Flight 9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And its a common thing to do when there is volcanic ash in the atmosphere. It just doesn't normally happen over really busy airspace.

Those pesky Icelanders - first they try to break our banks and now they are concentrating their devious powers on our airlines.

Air passengers are being warned of further delays tomorrow after warnings that a
"new ash cloud" was spreading towards the UK.

How on earth are you managing to put up with that?

Have you been testing your counting skills by any chance?
