GetRichSlow's World Cup report - live and direct from Cape Town

    Hi all,

As some might be aware I'm an expat and have been living in Cape Town for the last year living very close to the Greenpoint stadium (watched it being built from my dining room).

Football is not a passion of mine at all, but living in a country/city for the past year where the countdown to the WC kick off has been aired on the radio on the hour every hour gets you into the spirit of things!

Anyway, based on my 'new' interest in footie I applied for 4 x catergory 1 tickets for the England v Algeria playing at my 'home' town, and seemingly was very lucky to get all 4!

I even turned down an offer of nearly 5x the face value from someone offering to purchase them.

    Anyway, onto match day.
Got down to the stadium around 2 hours before kick off and went into one of the bars opposite the stadium. It the first time in a year that I felt like I was back in England, not to sure if I liked it though!
After 3 seperate ticket/police checks we finally made it to the base of the stadium. My first opinion, the pitch looks so much smaller than it does on TV. However, the stadium from the inside was a nerve tingling sight of St George cross flags hung everywhere, and a sea of white shirts.
The build up to kick off was amazing and it good to hear the noise of the vuvuzela's being drowned out by the fans, (however I failed to hear my personal favourite of 3 lions). I'm not patriotic but being there with the National Anthem being belted out again was a good experience too.
Now onto the review of the game........

    Thats it!
(PS. my personal opinion of the game was that I was happy that the England fans behaved themselves after a very frustrating 90 mins)

    Regards

    GRS

Bafana Bafana, GRS in Cape Town

    Hi,

Well after my review on the appalling game which I witnessed last week I thought I'd post a more upbeat one.
Today SA faced the virtually impossible and didn't achieve it......
However, it wasn't for a lack of trying and not just from the 11 men on the field.
There's been lots of upbeat reporting in the paper and we've even had some of their players on the TV asking for everyones support!

Today it seems most people were allowed to leave work early to watch the game (can't see that happening in England) and a lot of the shop workers were wearing the SA colours. Good turnout to watch the game and had a really good time.
It seems maybe people power does work sometime, yes I know they didn't qualify but there's one hell of a party going on in Long Street. Also I've just seen The Sun double decker bus going up it playing Waka Waka with dancing girls on the back!
So people of England get behind your team and have a good time (maybe you might even get off work early)

    GRS
