I think I put him on a higher pedestal using that spelling than I meant to!
I was pleasantly surprised when I went to the States. On the whole I found people to be more clued up than I had ever been led to believe. The reaction to this over there kind of proves that. Just a shame one nutter is allowed to tarnish the reputation of 300 million others.
Well, consider the Old Testament...
Why now the fuss on Quran. Have you read the Old Testament? My opinion tells me its far much fierce, on the other hand the New Testament was also authored by men some decades of years after AC. Questionably, statics put it that most humans have died in the name of Christ than any other religion on earth. For example, look at the number of deaths of 9/11 to the blameless deaths owing to the pointless bombings in Iraq and Afghan.. Which leaves you to the fact that religious people are the guilty party here and should be held responsible.
Not a religious chap but have no problemo with religion in and of itself, I've encountered a few folk who've turned their life around because of it.
What I do have a problem with is any form of "intolerant extremism" and those who, like Terry Jones, subscribe to it.
Frankly, the aforementioned intolerant wanker should be locked up for breaching the peace.
Really stupid idea
However it does amaze me that a westerner burns a Koran and it is seen as extremist while pakistanis were burning effergies of David Cameron when he suggested that Pakistan hadn;t done eveything they could to stop terroism was shrugged off as the norm.
It's like the black/white thing. A black person ofeends a white person racially and it's not seen as offensive (maybe be wrong on this but I've never seen a black person banged up for verbal racial abuse?) - the other way round and you'll be on the front page of your local newspaper and banged up with numerous hate campaigns against you (well you would down in Cornwall anyway!). That said I do detest racial abuse.
I really do believe religion is the root of all evil
I think this man is rather silly and seems to being doing this with the sole purpose to offend people, which is certainly not nice. However, being offended is no excuse whatsover to behave like a lunatic and start killing or rioting on the streets.
He is being irresponsible because his actions may cause some extremist Muslim people to overreact insanely and possibly harm others, but if they do so then ultimately it is those extremist Muslims who will be to blame for any killing. There is zero excuse here for acting violently.
If someone came up to me on the street and insulted/offended me I would not have been given any reason for acting violently towards them. Sure, the person may have been a twat but that is no excuse for me responding in a ludicrous manner. How difficult is it to shrug off the burning, it's a book for goodness sake.
I liked this:
Setting the Koran on fire, vs. setting personal liberties on fire : Pharyngula
Edit: Just after I wrote all that it seems he may have called it all off anyway.
When anything like this comes up, you can usually expect this guy to post a video... YouTube - patcondell's Channel
What he was proposing to do was wrong and is as much at odds with the bible's teaching as it is at odds with societies view on religious toleration.
I don't think this should be used as an example to condemn Christianity or religion in general. There are extremists in all walks of life from religion to politics. You don't condemn all animal rights protesters because some terrorize the families of scientists.
