Getting out of a funk
I'm in a bit of funk at the moment and I don't really know the best way to get out of it.
I work part-time from home two days a week, but my work is really busy on those days, and the rest of the time I look after my two boys who are under 3 so I have constant interruptions.
Just before Cheltenham I was getting quite into doing all of the little offers out there, IF bets, trying to do more arbs on the horses, sign up offers, endurance races etc. and I was enjoying myself doing it. Since then my gambling mojo has died and I CBA to do much of anything.
I have been wondering whether I should take a break like cloverleaves did, or whether a target helps, or whether I should start actually writing anything I do down (at the moment I don't note anything down at all), or try a new strategy i.e. asians etc. So...
How do you get yourself out of a funk?
I would start with record keeping. There is the new TGT spreadsheet if you enjoy them,
or if you prefer a ring binder A4 notebook from Sainsbury`s.
Go back for the last 2 months in your bookies/exchange statements and list the profits.
Adding them up will make you feel good and get you going again !
I concur with anglo, keep records, set targets and goals. Reward yourself when you achieve them.
If you are feeling flat as most of us are post Cheltenham give yourself a break. Switch the computer off for a couple of days and do something different.
Once it starts feeling like a chore I step away.
Here's the TGT sheet: -
If I ever get bored of it, I just think to myself "What else could I be doing to make that money? Working in a factory for £7 per hour doing awful work? Working in an office doing boring work, surrounded by egos for £13 per hour?".
"Pay no attention to what the critics say. No statue has ever been erected to a critic."
It's pretty quiet at the moment, so quite understandable...
Maybe take a few days off ,enjoy the sunshine and come back for the Grand National on Saturday..When I'm in a lull I think about a few sign ups. I'm so lazy there's loads I haven't done, but when you do one it sure makes you feel good.. Maybe spend a little bit of cash on yourselves and remind yourself it was free!!
hmm,Grand National we need a sweepstake don't we?
Worth keeping at least some records, so you can see how much you are making, and i also find it incredibly handy to have a handwritten "to do" list, which i cross things off as they're done.
Targets can be good, but don't set them too high, and thereby put pressure on yourself to make £X. A better type of target can be something you want to do or buy, and allocate some profits from APing towards this. I do this quite a lot, so for example last month I'd decided that half of any profit >£1,000 i made i would blow on anything i wanted - most of it went into my holiday fund, and knowing this helped keep a smile on my face as i beavered away over Cheltenham.
Offers have been a little thin on the ground since Cheltenham, but hopefully should pick up over the next few days with Aintree and The Masters being on, as well as CL footie tonight, Europa tomorrow and a full top flight program at the weekend.
You mentioned asians and the new Dafabet sub looks really good. The wr is high, but as long as you have a decent size float, and are sensible (no trying to bust out at high odds!) you should be fine. You can find some really amazing arbs dutching between Dafa and the main UK books, assuming you're not gubbed at them all.
Final thing i can think of, is if it's a nice sunny day, and there's nothing urgent on your "to do" list, get out in the sun, and forget APing for at least a few hours.

I'd second the call to keep records - its in my dna though. I'd freak out if i didn't know where my cash was or what my bets are. Also it makes me more efficient despite the time taken to note stuff down. Personally the ultimatcher is godsend for me. I've added some extra sheets with other tools such as the multi refund s/s and a to do list.
It also means if i want to know how much i've made this week/month/year etc a few clicks and i can see. Sometimes its interesting, sometimes disheartening but mostly motivating!
I'm also a big advocate of having a break when the funk hits. Personally i had plenty on the week after cheltenham, but last week i needed a break so really stepped back. On saturday for instance it was my first saturday of the year i was in the house with nothing to do (i'm usually paying sport) so could of arbed all day but instead enjoyed a bit of sunshine and the cricket/footy on the tele - it was so refreshing!
Achievable targets are also worthwhile. When i started to take this lark seriously i decided around £5k pa would make a noticeable to my quality of life so set myself a £400pm target. I've only not hit that target in a few months since (and generally due to holidays) so its definitely achievable for me, but its still a kick start at the beginning of each month. Also mentally it means if I've already hit £100 for the week i don't mind chilling.
As for treats i'm not that fussed - i think i've only spent about 5% of my total profits preferring to grow my float, but i do keep saying i'll treat myself to a something big!
That's excellent advice in this thread, thanks everyone. I stopped keeping any records since my hard drive failed about 18 months ago and I lost my spreadsheet. Shocking really but I have no idea where all of my cash is or if the bookies even pay out. that's probably my best place to start, getting organised. I'm not sure I can face looking back, so I might have to just pretend I am starting from scratch again.
I have been spending my float on a few things here and there and have been aiming to increase my deposit on a house but that target isn't well enough defined so I think I will break that down into smaller monthly targets as suggested.
A to-do list is definitely a good idea.
I think I will also stop doing offers on the slots unless they are really good ones - at the moment I waste far too much time on fun but unprofitable activities and not enough on the record keeping and sportsbook offers.
Once I'm organised I think I'll look into doing dafabet and maybe just try limiting my offers to a couple at a time since I don't have enough free time to do much more.
I have spent most of the afternoon outside today and will aim to do more of the same tomorrow. Then I'll look forward to my horse winning the sweepstake at the weekend
Quite an apt horse you got:
realised myself after MB has gone a little flat for me that I was spending hours in front of PC but not really doing much other than thinking about it.
decided to turn the PC off for a few days and have 24 hours with jack bauer over a few nights.
now back and want to get some money going again.
moral, if you need a break have one. moneys always here waiting :-D ( he says after missing the denman offer yesterday, oh well )
