Ok. So a tablet on it's own is useless for this game when you aren't near an internet source.

Let's say I have a folder full of music/videos on my PC (Windows), if I was using a laptop I could access the shared drive over the wireless and access them. Can you do this using an iPad, i.e. cut out the need to synchronise it or use iCloud?
I don't have an iPad and I don't run windows, but it's certainly technically possible

However, it might be a bit more elegant to run a multimedia server on your PC, along with a multimedia client on your iPad? Searches such as 'ios dnla' or 'ipad upnp' or even just 'ipad multimedia client' and 'windows multimedia server', might help you.

For those with an android phone running a recent enough version of the Android software, you can of course use the 'portable Wi-Fi hotspot' feature that comes built into your phone. It makes much more sense (for those who can) to share the phone's connection and only use one data contract, if that's all you need. I'm pretty sure that the iPhone also has a hotspot feature, too.
Some contracts don't allow it, and O2 used to not, but my current tariff on O2 does allow me to tether and use my included data allowance in this way, and I'm pretty sure most if not all of their smartphone tariffs allow it.
Just received one of these myself. It's not bad at all - for the money. Touch screen is pretty decent and accurate and its fairly snappy & responsive. Battery life doesn't seem very good at all, so can't image it would be too good watching films on a long plane journey or anything. At the end of the day it's significantly cheaper than an Ipad or Asus Transformer etc..

Cheers for mentioning it wndllll.

Apple Event on the 7th March. Can't imagine it will be anything other than a new ipad.

On the Asus Transformer Prime front, I have been watching the news on that closely and it has been a rollercoaster for them. It sounds as though one of the main problems is lack of supply, but combined with the fact they've been having problems with wifi/gps/updates to the next android OS (4/ICS) it has led to a lot of (mostly undeserved I get the impression) negative press.
Still quite tempated to get one (if I could find somewhere that sold them haha), although then again also tempted just to wait until June to get the next model (or see what the ipad 3 is like).
Lifestyle news | Apple announcement upsets Sky Bet
opened up the book on the device
’s technical specifications and were hoping to make a handsome profit. Company spokeswoman Helen Jacob explained to TechRadar
just how wrong this might end up being.
“Within a half an hour of the markets opening we took a flood of money including a string of very chunky three-figure bets. If the money is correct, then the new hardware will definitely not have a new carbon fibre casing, will not be called the iPad 2S and will have 128GB of storage,” Jacob said.
Obviously it’s all just speculation at this stage and the fact remains they may not even announce an iPad after all. There’s a growing school of thought it will be Apple’s iTV product released and what if they go even further than that. Cook steps up to the podium and announces: “Ladies and Gentlemen behold the iHuman.”
Also been reading some very interesting stuff about how dirty Apple actually played when it came to the name 'ipad'. It is very complicated, bu they apparently ripped off a Chinese manufacturer who owned the rights to the name 'ipad' and were using it for a different device.
Bizarrely the actual device that they had called 'ipad' back as far as 1998 looks a hell of a lot like a rip off of the original iMac, check the 'original' 'IPAD' out here:
Apple antagonist Proview unveils its own iPad ? The Register
It is hard to work out what the truth of the backstory to the current China issue is - if Proview (the company laying claim to the name 'ipad') are to be believed, Apple effectively stole the name ipad from them back in 2009(?) and the way in which they did it was extremely dubious - this below is from a PR issued by Proview:
At the same time though you have Apple arguing equally vociferously that Proview better keep their traps shut with that kind of nonsense otherwise they'll be crapping out affidavits until the cows come home...
As the U.S. complaint alleges, Apple was pressed for time as it sought to acquire the IPAD trademarks, in advance of a January 27, 2010 announcement to launch the Apple iPad. In addition, Apple was predisposed to use deception to obtain the trademarks from Proview Taiwan because it knew from prior dealings with Proview Taiwan that Proview Taiwan opposed Apple’s use of similar trademarks. To further this deception, Apple used an intermediary, Farncombe International and its Managing Director, Graham Robinson, to create an elaborate but false pretext for the purchase of Proview’s IPAD trademarks. Apple created a special purpose company named IP Application Development Limited (“IPAD Ltd.”), then concealed the fact that this company was acting as an agent of Apple. Graham Robinson further concealed Apple’s involvement by adopting a false alias, Jonathan Hargreaves, which he used when negotiating with Proview.

Picked these links up from another forum, but it's seriously, seriously tempting as a project to do with my 10 year old on the Raspberry Pi
which works with;

Or more simply;

(Purely in the interests of his education, of course!! )
