In-play - how not to do it.
I figured I'd have a go at in-play betting, to use my £50 free bet fund at Eurosportbet.
Standard Liege vs Arsenal in the Champions League looked good - 8.0 on Arsenal to win vs 7.2 on Betfair.
So I filled in the bet at ESB, clicked place and was informed that the odds were now 8.5 but the stake was limited to £33. Seems ok - update the spreadsheet.
Went to BF and managed to place £6 at 8.4 and another £16.51 at 10.5, as the odds slip. Disappointing to only have about £20 of profit so far.
Then Arsenal score. Great! Odds drop to 4.0 and keep falling (probably the only time I'll be happy that Arsenal score). So I pick up another £6.53 at 3.05 for a much nicer minimum profit of £27.70.
At this point, I figure I'll look at what's happened to the odds on ESB. "Bet not placed - timeout". huh!? I did click confirm before I updated the spreadsheet, right? Wrong.
So, at this point I have an unmatched lay liability of almost £215. But it's still 2-2, so maybe.... no they've scored again. Odds at 1.1, so I could recover £2.90... (which I decide not to do). And that's how it finished, losing me £215 - and Arsenal won too.
Well, it was about time a mistake cost me significantly, with a few that have gone in my favour. It could have been a lot worse and I'm still way up. One to chalk up to experience, I think.
(I obviously have a mental block with the way bet placement works on ESB and Stan James - same interface, I think. These are the only places I've thought I'd placed a bet and not realised until later that I hadn't.)
Oh no what a nightmare! I always seem to have problems when in-play betting, the odds change so quick it's easy to make a mistake & I don't know if it's just my computer but it takes ages for a bet to be placed.
Yeah best to put it down to experience & just remember how much you have earnt over all.
BTW be very careful with over/under markets near the end of the math...
Bad luck mate. I keep making mistakes on the willhill BOGOFs but have been lucky and most have been in my favour.
tonight i had placed 2 £20 bets for me and the OH on Liege @ 6 but not layed and it went In-play. next, I see the market suspended and thought FFS Arsenal have scored, but luckily it was Liege 1-0.
again tried to lay @ about 3 when the market suspended again. WTF I thought but it was now 2-0 to Liege.
due to this F up I had managed to make over £100.
These definitely even out over time, so best to remember the wins as well as the losses.
Kranz, in the words of Monty Python, You lucky lucky Bas.... (You know what I mean)
Bad luck Paul, but thanks for taking the time to tell us about it. It never hurts to get a reminder that a small mistake can have a very nasty effect on your bank balance. Hope you manage to get it back again quickly. Best of luck.
A Horse called " Joe Caster" ..Taught me a lot about how many times in one race a person can mess up in play betting ....
..... What started as nightmare ..Proceeded to get worse ..........The more crazy ideas I had to solve things ..the more the horse chose to do the opposite ..
Just count your blessings ...The reason you can make F**k up's like this is because you know about it ...You will soon recoup any short term set backs .
heh. In play "How Not To" ?? How's about this:
December 22nd, 2007. Been matched betting since the October. Found horses within a week. Thought trading was an interesting old thing, might try that whilst doing 3 SUBs at the same time, on a Saturday.
So, just out of bed, no breakfast, maybe a cup of tea. Sat at PC, whack some money on a horse race at bookie 1, lay it off as usual. Look at some races ahead of time, spy out the land as it were.
Find an Irish race, with an odds on favourite, the rest donkies. Horse's name was "Mick the Man". I think to myself "ey up chuck, whack a grand on that, let them go off, lay 0.2 lower (unless he's obviously won of course) and Robert's your mother's brother - which in my case IS the case"
Carry on arbing Gamebookers I think it was and this Irish race kicks off. I get to it on Betfair, back my £1000 (remember, it's already off) and SHIT MYSELF as the market is suspended. With my odds on, nailed on winner sitting at around about 2.0!
So, the market repoens and he's jumping all over the bloody shop. Being a n00b, I THINK rather than ACT. Realise I need to lay this off sharpish, forget odds, forget everything, just lay a grand and cross fingers.
BANG - market closed. No lay.
Mick the Man loses by "a short head", which is anything from a flared nostril, to what, 6 inches?
That son, is how NOT to do it!
I walked away from the computer, hit the wall hard, then went for breakfast.
Three days later lost another packet playing in play betting on darts. Fuck me that moves quick! My guy was dropping, dropping dropping - I lump on. Game over, he's lost! !
Sorry for disappearing for a bit. Thanks, y'all, for your replies.
