Championship Preview – Round 6

With just one quarter-final place assured, Round 6 of the European Rugby Champions Cup promises to be a cracker with fireworks aplenty.

Leinster Rugby are the only team with a perfect record and certain of their place in the last eight, meaning there are seven places up for grabs this weekend.

Glasgow Warriors v Exeter Chiefs

Saturday’s action kicks off at Scotstoun Stadium as Glasgow Warriors welcome an Exeter Chiefs side desperate to push their claims for a quarter-final spot.

Reigning Aviva Premiership champions Exeter Chiefs are nine points behind runaway leaders Leinster Rugby, but a bonus point win would see them move to 19 points and would be well placed for one of three runner-up qualifying spots available.

Prediction: Exeter Chiefs Win
Match odds: Glasgow 6/4 Exeter 13/25
Unibet pick: Exeter -8.5 @10/11

Montpellier v Leinster Rugby

Leinster Rugby will aim to maintain their perfect record and go six from six when they travel to face Montpellier.

Leinster defeated Montpellier in the reverse fixture and will be flying high after a 55-19 win over Glasgow Warriors last weekend, while Montpellier were beaten 41-10 by Exeter Chiefs in Round 5.

Prediction: Leinster Rugby Win
Match odds: Montpellier 8/13 Leinster 5/4
Unibet pick: Leinster @5/4

Clermont Auvergne v Ospreys

Clermont Auvergne head into Round 6 in control of Pool 2, but their guests Ospreys are just there points behind ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash.

Pool 2 remains a three-horse race with defending champions Saracens only five points adrift, but a win for Clermont Auvergne seals their fate in the last eight draw, but would leave Ospreys depending on a Saracens loss to keep their hopes alive.

Prediction: Clermont Auvergne Win
Match odds: Clermont 6/25 Ospreys 3/1
Unibet pick: Clermont -11.5 @10/11

Saracens v Northampton Saints

Reigning kings of Europe Saracens welcome Northampton Saints to Allianz Park on Saturday knowing their title defence hangs in the balance.

Saracens can only aim for a bonus point win and hope other results above fall in their favour to ensure they at the least get a shot at a runner-up spot which gives them a pass through – defeating Northampton Saints, given the 57-7 win in Round 1, should be the easy part of the bargain.

Prediction: Saracens Win
Match odds: Saracens 1/40 Northampton 13/1
Unibet pick: Northampton +24.5 @4/5

Benetton Rugby v Bath Rugby

Bath Rugby travel to the Stadio di Monigo on Saturday evening hoping to do all they can to throw their hat in the mix for a quarter-final spot as they take on Benetton Rugby.

Bath Rugby stand five points behind Pool 5 leaders RC Toulon ahead of the final round, but with them facing second-placed Scarlets, a bonus point win should see Bath Rugby elevated to second ahead of either RC Toulon or Scarlets and thus put them in contention.

Prediction: Bath Rugby Win
Match odds: Benetton 23/4 Bath 1/9
Unibet pick: Bath -21.5 @41/50

Scarlets v RC Toulon

Scarlets host three-times European champions RC Toulon at the Parc y Scarlets on Saturday with the Welsh region looking to steal Pool 5.

Just one point separates the Pro14 side from the French heavyweights, whom they lost 21-20 to at the Stade Felix Mayol earlier in the competition, but a win would see them clinch Pool 5 and a quarter-final spot should they prevail in Llanelli.

Prediction: RC Toulon Win
Match odds: Scarlets 2/5 Toulon 15/8
Unibet pick: Scarlets @2/5

Leicester Tigers v Castres Olympique

Racing travel to Welford Road for a Sunday dinner affair with Leicester Tigers knowing the remain in a three-horse race in Pool 4.

Leicester Tigers are the only side definitely out of the running in Pool 4, with Racing just a point behind leaders Munsters.

Prediction: Racing Win
Match odds: Leicester 13/10 Racing 3/5
Unibet pick: Racing -3.5 @4/5

Munster Rugby v Castres

Pool 4 leaders Munster Rugby welcome third place Castres to Thomond Park on Sunday as the battle for last eight spots reaches a climax.

Munster lead Castres Olympique by four points behind, and a win is the only result which keeps the Irish province’s fate in their own hands.

Prediction: Munster Rugby Win
Match odds: Munster 1/100 Castres 19/1
Unibet pick: Castres +26.5 @10/11

La Rochelle v Harlequins

In another where the top three can all conceivably make the knockout stages, La Rochelle will do battle with the already eliminated Harlequins in France.

La Rochelle are a lone point behind leaders Ulster Rugby and have the easiest draw, albeit Harlequins will be boosted by their thrilling comeback win against Wasps last weekend.

Prediction: La Rochelle Win
Match odds: La Rochelle 1/100 Harlequins 20/1
Unibet pick: Harlequins +28.5 @10/11

Wasps v Ulster Rugby

Ulster Rugby will travel to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on Sunday hoping they can wrap up Pool 1 with a win over Wasps.

Quarter-finalists last season, Wasps are still in contention themselves, but they are five points behind Ulster Rugby, who did also win the reverse fixture 19-9 in Round 1 – the very first game of the competition.

Prediction: Ulster Rugby Win
Match odds: Wasps 4/9 Ulster 17/10
Unibet pick: Ulster @17/10
