World Cup Qualifying Preview: Sunday

Scotland can can seal a World Cup play-off place with victory in Slovenia in their final group game on Sunday.

After beating Slovakia earlier in the week, Scotland are now in pole position to take second spot but with the Slovaks at home to Malta – the Scots know they will almost certainly need to win themselves in Ljubljana to seal second place.

“This is our the hardest test now,” said Strachan of the task facing his team.

“It’s not just at the back (they’re good). It’s all over the pitch. They’re physically strong, technically good.

“From what we’ve seen so far, it’s similar to a 4-4-2, they’ve got good players up front, they make sure there’s very little room in the middle of the park.”

England, who have already seal top spot in the group, finish their qualifying campaign in Lithuania.

Northern Ireland, who already have second place booked in Group C, need a point from their game with Norway to guarantee a play-off spot.

The Irish have six players who are just one yellow card away from a ban, but boss Michael O’Neill will be playing his strongest side.

Jonny Evans, Steven Davis, Corry Evans, Oliver Norwood, Stuart Dallas and Josh Magennis are all on one caution going into Sunday’s final Group C match.

Northern Ireland need a point from the game to ensure a World Cup play-off spot after Greece defeated Cyprus 2-1.

“We just can’t pick two teams,” said the Northern Ireland boss.

“You couldn’t throw a team out on the pitch with less than 24 hours notice and say, ‘Go and play’.

“I can’t take chances. If the alternative is to take that chance and miss out, or to go into the play-offs with players missing (through suspension).

“I have to do the right thing and the right thing is to try and win the game.”
