There is a lot of scope for trading the Ante Post market on betfair, early on there is a lot of fluctuations and over the length of time the market is up you can get a number of trades taken. I dont really have a strategy for it and its small stakes for fun, just back and lay on the spread and take advantage of any movements/the market churn.

As for picking a winner, its not a bad idea to pick a horse who has finished it the year before. They dont need to have done well but pick one who has a history of at least finishing, as that is no mean feat, and doing that is half the job done straight away.

My Dad (who had the winner 7 years in a row during one spell) has a decent method for picking a horse in the Grand National. Rather than look for the winner, begin by ruling out the ones that can't win. You are then left with half or even quarter of the field from which to select.

So for example, he would rule out:

- Anything carrying more than 11st 4lb
- Anything with a long handicap of 9st 7lb or less
- Anything 6 or younger
- Anything 13 or older
- Anything that's run 10 times or more that season
- Anything that's fallen twice or more that season or 3 times or more ever
- Anything ridden by a girl (sorry girls)
- Anything 100/1 or bigger
- Anything that hasn't won over further than 2½ miles

To be honest you can be a lot more brutal than that but at the very least all of the above would be dismissed. Pretty reliable system.
