Does that mean they’ve improved?
That depends on whether we’re talking about improving the playing squad, or an improvement in the manner in which they’ll go about games (maybe even attempting to win a few)? Not so much the former although defence and midfield have been strengthened, but with Paul Lambert replacing Big Ek at the helm you’ve got to back the latter.

With the playing squad largely unchanged at this point the changes have got to come from within either in the style of play or youth. Lambert presided over a swashbuckling Norwich team last term and you’d be hard pressed to find a Villa fan that could say that about their team last year.

It seems unlikely they could finish lower than last year, and with a couple of additions maybe a top half finish isn’t out of their reach. Just hope that Lambert doesn’t continue his Martin O’Neil odyssey buy paying large sums for rubbish players and giving them generous and long contracts which means they’re un-shiftable when you want to get rid.

Where will they finish this year?
9th - Lambert can’t do worse without going down, and that seems unlikely. The middle of the premier league is a minefield for predictions, but expect Aston Villa to be near the top of the other league.

Player worth watching
They’re marquee signing……….er………or string puller in chief Stephen Ireland........maybe not based on last year. Karim El Ahmadi should do well if he can handle the step up in pace from Holland, and might even put some smiles on the faces of the Holt end:

Who would they want back?
Stiliyan Petrov would be a welcome return from a serious illness for playing and leadership, but how they would love a fully firing Heskey back. Only kidding, they need Platt to provide some energy and goals from midfield (but it’s better to watch him with the gloves on):
