Does that mean they’ve improved?
Big money being spent isn’t unusual at Chelsea, spending on some of the areas that weren’t priorities for improvement is slightly odd though. No replacement for Drogba leaves the striking situation a little thin, much will be required of Torres this season and based on the last couple of years that’s not something to rely on.
Oscar and Hazard have arrived for King’s (Road) ransoms and come with skill, potential and youth. Everyone gels and the rotation is dealt with correctly these players combining with Lampard, Ramieres, Mata and the rest gives them potent options in midfield.
The defence wasn’t as watertight as we’ve come to expect from Chelsea, which might have been related to last terms manager trying to play a high line with ageing players. There’s is a gap at right back and some more cover is required for the centre back position, particularly if Terry ends up with a ban in his upcoming hearing (despite being found not guilty in a court of law he still used language not befitting of a professional footballer, but I’m sure his lawyers will have a field day with this so expect a compromise of a couple of games instead of the Suarez 8)
Where will they finish this year – 4th
A marked improvement on last year’s league position. Would we be alone in hoping one of the big guns dropped out of the top four and won the Champions League to give them a taste of their own medicine though?
Player worth watching?
Although the pressure will be on Torres, a European Championship golden boot (joint top scorer, less games required to score them) should give him a boost. That means the exciting Oscar might be afforded the time to bed in and show his worth:

Who would they want back?
Well Drogba circa 2007 would be a touch, Mouriniho will always cast a shadow here following his remarkable success, but what Chelsea really need is the kind of footballer, and man, that offsets Terry. This man made them almost lovable, step forward Gianfranco Zola (and don’t mention your managerial career so far):
