Golf Preview – Wyndham Championship

So the week after the final major and there is not too much going on in the golfing world with the PGA’s Wyndham Championship taking centre.

Minor events are taking place in Germany and Fiji, but the Wyndham in Greensboro, North Carolina is our area of interest this week.

Hosted at the Sedgefield Country Club and founded in 1938, it is a highly respected tournament on the tour.

A lot of of sports big names are taking time off, but the Wyndham will still be closely competed for with Kevin Kisner – who came close to winning the US PGA at Quail Hollow – one of the favourites to win.

“I’m excited where we’re headed,” Kisner said. “If I can keep playing the way I’m playing, I’ll have plenty of chances to win.”

The favourite for the event is Swedish star Henrik Stenson – who is looking on this as preparation for the FedEx Cup play-offs.

“There’s a few different reasons why I’m here this week and one is, guarantee I get my numbers up on the PGA Tour as I need to have 15 and at this point I can only guarantee two other Playoffs,” he said.
“At the same time it’s a great opportunity to put myself in a better spot heading into next week’s play-offs and I tried it out a couple different of ways.”

The pro’s point of view…

Our resident golf expert is Cliff Jackson. Cliff is a leading youth coach and PGA professional at the famed Seaton Carew Links – one of the oldest courses in the world.

I like Henrik Stenson here, he is playing here as he looks ahead to the rest of the season and he will surely be in contention here. And maybe Graeme McDowell might be due

The Bookie says…

We caught up with BetVictor’s Jack Milner – an expert in the golfing markets

After back-to-back winners on the PGA Tour, I’m confident we can give readers a hat-trick and strongly fancy Jason Dufner at 25/1 for the Wyndham Championship. Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship last week, advised at 45/1 with BetVictor, and whilst personally a satisfying result it was heartache elsewhere with Kevin Kisner backed at 200/1 and 125/1 in the spring.

He is the 16/1 second favourite but looked spent after going in the water at 18 at Quail Hollow and is far, far too short after a gruelling four days at the fourth and final major. Henrik Stenson is the 12/1 favourite but has been too inconsistent this year however, Dufner has been the exact opposite and was magnificent in carding a final round 68 to win the Memorial Tournament earlier in the season.

He will have been no doubt buoyed by the success of good friend Justin Thomas last weekend and will relish the straight fairways and narrows greens this week. Another friend of JT who likewise has a lot to celebrate is Smylie Kaufman, who was engaged to childhood sweetheart last week. Kaufman’s strengths are his accuracy off the tee and I’m surprised to see him as big as 125/1.

The 25-year-old is currently ranked 135 in the Fedex Cup rankings and need a good week to avoid being bubbled .He was back to form with finishes of T12 and T27 finishes when last seen on tour and shouldn’t be a three-figure price.

Ollie Schniederjans was just that until a gamble in the week, and he still looks a fair bit of value at 80/1. The tournament has a good record for rookie winners and after achieving four top tens on tour already this season, arrives in good form to gain a deserved maiden success.

Selection

Jason Dufner 28/1

Ollie Schniederjans 80/1

Smylie Kaufman 125/1
