Tuesday World Cup qualifying preview

Republic of Ireland and Wales are both in action in Group D of qualifying as they look to push on for a place at the World Cup finals.

Serbia currently lead the way in Group D, but they travel to Dublin and Ireland could overtake them with victory at The Aviva Stadium.

Ireland were disappointed with their 1-1 draw with Georgia last week, but boss Martin O’Neill is looking for a big response.

“It was a disappointing result [in Georgia], but there was always going to be the same mentality to go into the Serbia game to get the three points and to win the game,”  he said.

“We can draw on past results we’ve had at the Aviva and hopefully give it full throttle and go for it.”

Wales travel to Moldova in the same group on a high after victory over Austria last week, but Chris Coleman knows nothing but a win will do if they are to overtake Ireland or Serbia at the top.

“We need to show some resilience, keep the belief, stay confident and turn a draw into a win,” Coleman said.

“If you look at the players in our squad, the total number of caps is a big positive. You can play at any level of football domestically, but when you step up to international football it’s a different kettle of fish. For us to have players who have 60, 70 or 80 caps is a big thing.”

See below for a run-down on the games, including predictions from former England, Crystal Palace and Tottenham midfielder Andy Gray and our own Football Insider Graeme Bailey.
