Bailey’s Bullet Points

Our Football Insider Graeme Bailey looks back on the weekend’s footballing action and brings you his ‘Bullet points’….

  • UNITED NEED TO LIVE UP TO THEIR NAME
United are anything but their name at the moment following their defeat to Brighton. Jose Mourinho didn’t lay into his side after the calamitous defensive performance, but perhaps he should of. United are better than what they are showing, but there is clearly something missing and they need to be United.
  • RAFA SELECTION
A poor start from Newcastle – and although they spent sparingly to say the least, why isn’t Rafa Benitez using his new buys? Especially Salomon Rondon. Rondon is Newcastle’s best striker and needs to be playing.
  • CHELSEA’S CLASS EMERGING
Maurizio Sarri’s appointment raised a few eyebrows, but already you can see the style that is being put in place by the Italian. The Blues look a different side to last term, the look together but they look so dangerous and with Eden Hazard staying with them for at least another season – the prospects at Chelsea are fascinating.
  • CHERRIES ARE THE PICK
Bournemouth for me were the performance of the weekend. Not many people had them down to win, indeed a lot of people (I wasn’t one of them) had the Cherries to struggle this season and go down – but their display at The London Stadium showed Eddie Howe’s side are still moving forward under his guidance.
  • HORNETS HAVE A REAL STING – BURNLEY BEWARE
Watford’s start to the season has been superb, nothing short of that and Javi Gracia needs to take the plaudits for a perfect start to the new campaign. And on the flip side Burnley – who Watford beat – need to make sure their focus is not on the Europa League, they need to make sure the Premier League remains their bread and butter.
  • PLAYERS OF THE WEEKEND
A lot of candidates but my players of the weekend would be….
GOALKEEPER – Kasper Schmeichel – Brilliant display against Wolves by the Great Dane, confirming his stature as one of the best in the league.
DEFENDER – Benjamin Mendy – Surely challenging Marcos Alonso for the best in the Premier League, the Frenchman is basically a new signing for City and he is showing just how good he is.
MIDFIELDER – David Brooks – The young Welshman was a thorn in the side of West Ham throughout. Eddie Howe looks like he has picked up a star of the future in Brooks.
FORWARD – Sergio Aguero – What more needs to be said about the ubiquitous Argentine. Simply superb.
