Bailey’s Bullet Points

Our Football Insider Graeme Bailey looks back on the weekend’s footballing action and brings you his ‘Bullet points’….

  • MOURINHO WAS RIGHT ABOUT HIS DEFENCE
Jose Mourinho was not quick to hide the fact that he wanted and needed a new central defender this summer – but few could believe how right he was. The central defensive display against Spurs was a shambles, and only highlights the Portuguese was right.
  • ZIDANE SHADOW LOOMING
You have to wonder whether the fact a top class manager like Zinedine Zidane being available will prove an issue to Jose Mourinho – the fact that the Frenchman is free, is sure to appeal to the Old Trafford hierarchy.
  • ALISSON ALREADY PROVIDING POINTS
It didn’t take a genius to work out that Liverpool needed a goalkeeper this summer, and Brazilian Alisson showed just what he is capable of with a top display and one brilliant save.
  • TOTTENHAM SHOWING TITLE CREDENTIALS
Whilst everyone focuses on Man United’s poor display on Monday, you can’t under-estimate just how good Tottenham were. Three wins from three, Spurs are very much looking the part.
  • HAMMER BLOW
West Ham’s start to the new season has been shocking – but they have to trust that Manuel Pellegrini is the man to get them out of trouble, but it looks a tough job already.
  • PLAYERS OF THE WEEKEND
A lot of candidates but my players of the weekend would be….
GOALKEEPER – Alisson – Produced one brilliant save to claim his clean-sheet and give Liverpool the win, shows that he can make the difference
DEFENDER – Harry Maguire – A late goal from the England man, picking up from where he left off in the summer
MIDFIELDER – Jean Michael Seri – The Ivorian opened his account in England as he helped Fulham take the win, surely more to come from the diminutive African
FORWARD – Lucas Moura – Wonderful display from the Brazilian with two goals at Old Trafford
