Barcelona seal Coutinho deal

Barcelona have agreed terms with Liverpool for Philippe Coutinho.

It is understood the Spanish giants will pay €160million for the Brazilian playmaker – which is around £142million.

Coutinho did not travel on Liverpool’s winter training break to Dubai this weekend, and instead will be heading to Catalunya to put the finishes touches on a deal that will be for five-and-a-half years.

In a statement, the Premier League outfit said: “Liverpool FC can confirm Philippe Coutinho will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms.

“The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities to conclude the transfer immediately.”

The deal for the 25-year-old is going through after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp finally sanctioned the deal and I understand the club’s owners will provide the funds to buy a replacement – should the German look to sign one this month.

I understand West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar have all be discussed within the corridors of power at Anfield.

Most Bookmakers closed their books on Coutinho joining Barcelona hours before the move was sealed.

Paddy Power, who had listed Coutinho at 2/5 at the start of the day to make the move this month, commented: “It’s clearly time for a Nou start for Philippe, as he puts the ‘out’ into Coutinho.

“Liverpool tried to play hardball, but Barcelona play tiki-taka – and I know which I prefer.”
