Battle for Rondon

Newcastle United face an uphill battle to try and seal a deal for former loan star Salomon Rondon.

29-year-old Rondon enjoyed a hugely successful year on-loan at St James’ Park from relegated West Bromwich Albion.

The Venezuelan bagged 11 league goals, his best season ever in England and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has not hidden his desire to land him.

West Brom’s failure to return to the top-flight this season, has meant a release clause has kicked in for Rondon – which is set at £16.5million.

However, Newcastle are not keen on pay that fee for a 29-year-old – but unfortunately for them, other Premier League sides are believed to be willing to do so.

Sources have confirmed to us that Everton, Watford and West Ham United are keen on competing for his signature, whilst Wolves have also been credited with an interest.

There is also foreign interest, but Rondon is understood to be more than happy with life in England.

As it stands Bookmakers are still favouring that he will return to Newcastle.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Salomon Rondon is said to be Rafa’s top target – but the fact that he’s not put pen to paper on a new deal at St James’ Park does leave some question marks.

“Wolves are out next most likely target for the striker. Because that’s exactly what they need – another addition to their already frightening attacking force!”
