Benfica deals still in United sights

Manchester United are still pursuing deals with Benfica for Victor Lindelof and Ederson, but they Nelson Semedo appears to be going elsewhere.

Swedish centre-half Lindelof and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson remain very high on their wanted list for the summer.

22-year-old Lindelof has been a target for Mourinho since he took charge of United last summer, and a move almost happened in January, and terms with the player and his camp are already agreed.

However, other clubs are still showing an interest and I am told that Paris Saint Germain have made contact with Benfica – but it is understood the player has his heart set on a move to United. He signed a new deal with Benfica only in March, but that was understood to be more of a technical issue as the club had also managed to finalise a deal with his former club Vasteras, taking out a future payment clause.

United agreed terms with the player months ago, but are still in talks with the Portuguese giants over a fee for the Swede – with Benfica wanting nearer £50million with the English giants now wanting to go above £40million – but they remain confident of completing a deal.

They are also holding talk with Benfica over their number one Ederson, who is one of the top choices to replace David De Gea – should he leave the club this summer.

A third player has also been talked about between the two clubs in the shape of right-back Nelson Semedo, but it seems United’s interest is not as strong as that of Manchester City and Barcelona, who look more likely to secure a deal.

Reaction

We spoke with TheUnitedEnd editor Tom McDermott about the prospect of Lindelof and Ederson arriving at Old Trafford.

“Is Lindelof what United really need? On paper he has all the attributes but I just wonder if Mourinho will go for someone with more experience. Whoever arrives will have to partner Eric Bailly who has gone from strength to strength,” he told TheGamblingTimes.com.

“Ederson is a deal I certainly don’t see happening and if it does he wouldn’t be first choice. Mourinho will have a plan in place if De Gea leaves and don’t forget he has a very good option already at the club in Romero.”
