Big six kept apart as derbies dominate cup draw

The six favourites for the FA Cup – Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur – were all kept apart in the third round.

The undoubted tie of the round saw a Merseyside derby picked out with Liverpool hosting Everton – and that was not the only derby drawn as Brighton will also face fierce rivals Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough will entertain Sunderland in a Tees-Wear clash.

Man City will host Premier League opposition in Burnley, whilst Manchester United host Derby and Chelsea travel to Norwich.

AFC Wimbledon will travel to Wembley to take on capital neighbours Tottenham and holders Arsenal face a tricky looking tie at Nottingham Forest.

The lowest rank side in the draw – Hereford FC from the seventh tier, will face Premier League Leicester if they can overcome Fleetwood in a replay.

Two other non-league sides are in the draw, but they all need replays to progress. AFC Fylde could play Premier League Bournemouth but only if they beat Wigan in a replay.

Woking earn them a trip to Championship side Aston Villa, if they can beat Peterborough.

Bookmakers have moved to cut the odds on favourites Man City to 9/2, on the back of the draw.

BetVictor’s Michael Triffitt said: “The big six were all kept apart following the third round FA Cup draw with Liverpool v Everton the undaunted tie of the round. The red side of Merseyside remain 10-1 with the Blue side drifting to 33/1.

“Manchester City shorten to 9/2 from 5/1 after been paired with Burnley at home whilst Chelsea shorten a point to 6/1 from 7/1 after they were handed a trip to Championship underachievers Norwich. Manchester United are 6/1 from 7/1 after drawing Derby at Old Trafford and Spurs 8/1 from 9/1 after a cosy looking home tie with Wimbledon.”
