Bookies blown away by Farah success

One of the biggest sporting upsets of the year saw Mo Farah capture the BBC Sports Personality award.

Farah was not expected to feature, and it looked like pre-ceremony favourite Anthony Joshua was on course for the title, after Jonnie Peacock and Jonathan Rea claimed third and second respectively.

However, it was not Joshua’s name called out by Farah – who was as long as 33/1 to claim the award. Joshua was around 1/10 for the honour – around 90% probability and to finish top three he was 1/100, which is 99% probability.

“The last time a shock like this happened at SPOTY was when 20/1 shot Ryan Giggs beat 1/10 favourite Jenson Button to the award,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.

“This is as much of a shock as that and 77% of all bets placed on this market were for Joshua. Wow!!!”
