Bookmakers close book on Casillas-Liverpool move

Some bookmakers have closed their books on Spanish international goalkeeper Iker Casillas joining Liverpool this summer.

Casillas, who has just turned 36, is out of contract with Portuguese giants Porto – who he joined from Real Madrid two-years ago.

Casillas – Spain’s most capped player – has decided to move on from Porto, and he has received offers from Turkey, China, America and the Middle East.

However, Liverpool are reported to have stepped in and made an offer for Casillas to join them this summer.

Ladbrokes have now closed their book on Casillas after his odds came into 1/7 – he was as large as 9/4 earlier in the week.

Ladbrokes News’ Dave Burin said: “It’s not a done deal just yet, but with the wheels in motion on an Anfield move, we’re not taking any chances on Casillas.”

New goalkeeper

Liverpool have been constantly linked with a new goalkeeper and had shown an interest in England’s Joe Hart and Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford – but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had insisted he was happy with his current goalkeeping department which features Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and Danny Ward – currently on-loan at Huddersfield.

When asked about Hart only a few weeks ago, Klopp said:  “It is not for us in this moment and hopefully not for us in the future – not because of Joe but we already have two strong goalkeepers.

“Wardy [Danny Ward] is at Huddersfield and playing a brilliant season – he is our player so we will bring him back next year so there is competition.

“The situation with our goalkeepers is really good. I understand the question but I cannot give the answer probably a few people want.”

But our Football Insider Graeme Bailey believes that Liverpool’s hierarchy have deemed the need for a new keeper, and the chance to sign Casillas on a free transfer was too good a chance to turn down.

“Casillas is still a top-class goalkeeper, his record at Porto has been brilliant since leaving Real Madrid,” Bailey told us.

“Sources indicate that Liverpool’s coaches felt another keeper was needed, and it looks like that they have persuaded Klopp of the need to add another keeper.”
