The Premier League finishes this weekend, but does it? Perhaps not – we may have an unprecedented extra game – a Champions League play-off.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal could face a possible play-off to determine next season’s Champions League places

The three clubs, occupying third to fifth place in the Premier League, are separated by three points going into Sunday’s final round of games.

But their goal difference, and goals scored, are close enough to raise the prospect of two teams finishing with identical records – which would lead to a one-off play-off match.

Premier League Regulation C.17 states: “If either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds.”

We spoke to BetFred who have priced up the three possible matches.

Liverpool v Arsenal – 500/1
If Liverpool lose 2-0 against Middlesbrough and Arsenal draw 1-1 with Everton, they would have the same points, the same goal difference and the same goals scored and be tied for fourth.

Liverpool v Manchester City 500/1
If Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 3-0 and Man City draw 3-3 against Watford, that would mean they have the same points, the same goal difference and the same goals scored and be tied for third.

Arsenal v Manchester City 1700/1
If Arsenal beat Everton 1-0 and Man City lose 4-0 against Watford, they would have the same points, the same goal difference and the same goals scored and could be tied for third or fourth depending on Liverpool’s result.

Any play-off would likely be on one of Wednesday May 31 or Thursday June 1.
