Champions League Wednesday Preview

Manchester United and Chelsea are both looking to book their places in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday, whilst Celtic can secure a Europa League spot.

United travel to Basel looking to seal top-spot in Group A, and the go to Switzerland knowing a draw will be enough, indeed they will be through no matter what, if CSKA Moscow do not win.

Red Devils chief Jose Mourinho is not too happy with the St Jakob pitch which suffered major damage during the recent World Cup play-off with Northern Ireland – but he is happy with the effort being made.

“I gave it a look but honestly I don’t know. I want to see after 20 minutes. At this moment it looks okay but let’s see after 20 minutes,” said Mourinho.

“But at least I respect the effort of trying to make a positive pitch after it being so bad in the play-offs in the national team.”

In Group C, Chelsea are in Azerbaijan with the knockout phase on their mind, they know a win over Qarabag will see them through whilst a draw would be enough if Atletico Madrid do not beat Roma.

Antonio Conte has his mind firmly focused on progression and said: “I think this will be the most important game of the season because we have the possibility, with a win, to go through to the next round in the Champions League, so to start our path in this way was very positive.”

Celtic already know they can’t finish in the top-two but they will seal third if they win at the Parc Des Princes against Paris Saint Germain and Anderlecht don’t. A draw for Celtic will be enough, if Anderlecht lose.

Bhoys chief Brendan Rodgers is looking for a good performance in the French capital.

“Our away performance in Anderlecht was very good. Our last performance against Bayern Munich I thought was excellent,” he said.

“If you don’t get the result, for us it’s about taking pride in the performance, really, so that’s something that we hope that we can achieve.”
