Confident McIlroy eyes up Grand Slam

Rory McIlroy is favourite to win The Masters this week and Bookmakers fully believe it is a matter of when he completes the golfing Grand Slam.

The Northern Irish star has the chance to become only the sixth golfer of all time to claim the Grand Slam – winning all four majors in their career.

As it stands the only players to achieve the feat are Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods – indeed McIlroy woud become the first European to ever do so.

And McIlroy is hopeful he will one day claim the Green Jacket – which will give him his Grand Slam.

“I’ve had four top-10s in a row since going there [chasing the Grand Slam]. I don’t want to make predictions but I’d like to think that if I’m going to go back to Augusta over the next 10 or 15 years, at least a quarter or a third of those times I’m going to give myself a pretty good chance to win.,” he said.

“One of these years, I’m sure I’ll get myself into position. ‘Whether it’s this year, or 10 years down the line, hopefully I’ll capitalise on it.

“The massive tall pines, the contrast between the green grass and the white bunkers, the yellow flagsticks, there are so many things to look at and be aware of and it paints a picture for you.

“And I know I’ve played well enough and I’ve shot enough good scores around here over the years that if I can put my best effort forward, I’m going to have a good chance to do well here.

“But it’s definitely different (this year). I’m not getting ahead of myself. Not thinking about the tee shot on Thursday or thinking about what is to come this week and that’s something I probably will never stop trying to learn or to practice. But I’m in a good place with it.

“Again, you know, I keep saying this, I would dearly love to win this tournament one day. If it doesn’t happen this week, that’s totally fine, I’ll come back next year and have another crack at it. But I’m happy with where everything is, body, mind, game. “

Bookmakers certainly think that McIlroy could have a good 2019, although Coral make him 500/1 to win all four majors this season.

Coral has seen strong support for McIlroy to win the Masters where is the 6/1 favourite with the firm on the back of the gamble.

“The man we fear this week is Rory McIlroy as punters have wasted no time in getting stuck into the Northern Irishman to complete the Grand Slam,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“Our online punters can get 10 places once again this year and the two names which are being well-backed at bigger prices are Matt Kuchar and Charley Hoffman, two players who played well in Texas and can shoot low at Augusta,” added Hill.
