Cracksman and Order of St George consider Arc tilt

Cracksman and Order of St George – two of the favourites for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – are yet to decide whether to run in the French classic.

The race, taking place at Chantilly again this year before returning to Longchamp, looks a mouthwatering affair that could be dominated by the British this time around.

John Gosden’s brilliant filly Enable is firm favourite for the event but her stablemate Cracksman could also be running after winning the Prix Niel at the weekend – but owner Anthony Oppenheimer is unsure.

Cracksman’s normal jockey Frankie Dettori will be on-board Enable, and Oppenheimer is unsure whether he would want to saddle his horse with another.

“He is a very good horse. As far as the Arc goes, Frankie will be riding another horse and I don’t think Cracksman would like to be ridden by anyone else. There are a lot of good jockeys, but there’s only one Frankie,” said Oppenheimer.

“Cracksman is still improving. In the Epsom Derby, he was still immature. He has strengthened up since and is coming on week by week.

“Coming here, we didn’t want him to have a hard race, either physically or mentally. The objective is to preserve him for his four-year-old season.”

Another contender is Aidan O’Brien’s Order of St George, who like Cracksman, enjoyed a good weekend win as his took the Irish St Ledger.

And O’Brien is now left to decide whether to go for the Arc or the Melbourne Cup and said: “He’s an unbelievable horse. He has class – you saw what he did in the Arc last year, he handles all grounds and he can stay as far as two and a half miles.

“He has the choice of returning for the Arc this year or going to the Melbourne Cup. We’ll think about that and the lads will decide.

“I suppose the Arc might be the favoured option, but we’ll see. He’d be very comfortable over a mile and a half if there is an ease in the ground at Chantilly.”

Bookmakers are reacting and the odds on both horses, BetVictor have Cracksman second favourite behind Enable.

Spokesperson Jack Milner said: “BetVictor are of the opinion that Cracksman will join his stablemate Enable in The Arc, and make the son of Frankel our 3/1 second favourite Non Runner No Bet.

“With connections still adamant, despite bolting-up under Frankie Dettori in the Prix Niel, that he wouldn’t be back in a fortnight we’re not convinced and expect him to line-up alongside Enable in The Arc.”
