Chances are your attentions might be drawn to a couple of other things going on this weekend, rather than the horse racing action. If, however you can switch your gaze to Newbury, rather than the royal wedding or the FA Cup Final, then you might witness some decent races.
Let’s start with the big race of the day, the Lockinge. Rhododendron is favourite and if she is at her best dropping back in trip then she has an obvious chance. She receives a few pounds from the boys which will help her cause and she goes on any ground. There’s a lot to like based on her runner-up efforts in last year’s 1000 Guineas and Oaks, plus Group 1 form of the highest quality against her own sex in France and the USA. She’s the pick.
Librisa Breeze would much prefer some give in the ground, which may also be true of Zabeel Prince although he is progressive and untried on a quicker surface. Addeybb is also an improving horse whose best form is on softer conditions. Limato should have no issue with the ground and must be respected but a mile could stretch the stamina.
Lancaster Bomber looks like the real value in the race, as a proven Group 1 performer over ideal trip and ground. Only problem is that he rarely gets his nose in front. Still, a solid each-way option. I hate to be boring but Rhododendron really is the one to beat if she brings her ‘A’ Game.
Murillo put in a good run in the 2000 Guineas for much of the contest and with the form being franked this week already by Roaring Lion, he could be the one to select in the 1.50pm Listed race. The lightly raced Eqtidaar is likely to be his biggest threat.
And to round things off, Crystal Ocean is a heavy favourite for the Al Rayyan Stakes. Second Step could be the value proposition if Crystal Ocean fails to fire.
If our strongest picks are put in a treble, then Ryan Moore is the man we are following in each race and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him land the multiple. Go on Ryan! Best of luck with all your bets.
