If you’ve been watching the Winter Olympics, you’ll know that legend Shaun White won gold in the halfpipe.

After the disappointment of Sochi, White was aiming for the big comeback at Pyeongchang, the gold medal that would cement his already incredible position in the history of sports. He nailed it and his legacy is secured.

While he might not be quite as big of a household name, Cue Card is on the road to redemption himself. He’s 12-years-old, everybody has written him off and he goes in to this weekend’s Ascot Chase as a 10/1 outshot.

Here’s the thing, much like White, Cue Card should win if he shows his best. It’s a big question mark and there are some progressive rivals but the argument for Cue Card is undeniable. The only two times he’s raced at Ascot, he’s won the Ascot Chase. He’s won nine Grade 1s and he likes soft ground. Perhaps there might be one final hurrah in the old boy yet.

Waiting Patiently has been in good form and should not be overlooked as a danger, if he can continue his good form in a much better grade of race. However, I feel there is more potential in both Top Notch and Coney Island.

It’s tough to choose between the pair but I’m inclined to go with Top Notch. He’s really impressed me with his improved performances this season and he’s also got a perfect record at Ascot. Coney Island is a danger after a taking effort in a graduation chase at the track in December, but he’s the least experienced in the line-up and it will be quite the step-up in task. Top Notch then for me.

The other race we’ll focus on is at Haydock; the Grand National Trial.

The Dutchman won the Peter Marsh chase when last seen at the course, but it could be a lot tougher off a 13lbs higher mark for that victory. Blaklion has also climbed the handicap with an 8lbs rise for winning the Becher Chase at Aintree. He has definite claims, while at longer odds Three Faces West must be considered.

He’s not been in the greatest form, but he’s capable of pulling out a big effort and could represent a smidgen of value. Blaklion is the most likely winner, but Three Faces West should also be in the first three home. Best of luck with your bets.
