F1 Preview – Monaco GP

The Formula One bandwagon has rolled into Monte Carlo for the flag ship Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.

It forms part of the Triple Crown of motorsport along with the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans – the Monaco GP is considered the most prestigious race in the world, as well as one of the oldest – as it has run since 1929.

It is the only Grand Prix that does not adhere to the FIA’s mandated 305-kilometre (190-mile) minimum race distance.

It is a ‘home’ Grand Prix for many drivers who reside in the tax-haven Principality, but for the first time since 1994 – a Monaco-born driver will compete on home soil in the shape of Charles Leclerc – who has enjoyed a hugely successful debut campaign with Sauber.

The 20-year-old is looking forward to following tyre marks of Olivier Beretta, who was the last Monegasque to compete on the streets of Monte Carlo.

“There are a lot of emotions for me, with my first Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix coming up this weekend,” said Leclerc.

“I have dreamt of being part of this event ever since I was a child and it is incredible for this dream to finally come true. It will be nice to have my friends and family there to support me, and I look forward to sharing this special moment with the Monegasque people.

“Driving on city circuits is something I always enjoy, and I love the challenge that it brings to me as a driver.

“Although I know the city well, it will be a completely new experience for me to drive on the streets of Monte Carlo in a Formula 1 car.

“I look forward to gaining a different perspective on my home town. It will be an unforgettable weekend for me, and I can’t wait for it to start.”

The big result in Azerbaijan was Force India’s third place finish with Sergio Perez claiming a podium finish, and they are hoping their progress can continue in Spain.

“Finishing on the podium in Baku felt amazing. After a few tough races we finally got a result we deserved,” said Perez.

“Barcelona is the perfect place to start this part of the championship. I really enjoy the city of Barcelona and my trainer Xavi is Catalan, so it’s a special race for him.”

Leclerc has nine points to his name so far, including a brilliant sixth in Azerbaijan, and he has no shortage of admirers including the sport’s two biggest names in the shape of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel – the current World Championship contenders.

Championship leader Hamilton has been similarly impressed by the 20-year-old F1 rookie, whose back-to-back points-finishes were Sauber’s first since 2015.

“I watched him coming through and what he’s done in the last couple of years was great to see,” said Hamilton.

“I sit with team bosses and engineers and we watch the lower categories and are always looking out for that shining talent to come through.”

Vettel could very well have a future team-mate on his hands given Leclerc is part of Ferrari’s young driver programme.

“I think the hype is absolutely justified,” said Vettel.

“I’m not signing who’s sitting next to me, probably you should ask Maurizio [Arrivabene, team boss], but I don’t see why not.

“Obviously he has more years. The races he had so far, he used his opportunities and scored points with a car that doesn’t belong in the points so he’s doing everything he can at the moment.”

Going into the weekend and both Vettel, last year’s winner, and Hamilton are not the favourites to win for the first time this year with Red Bull pair Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen favoured to take the win.

“I have to be prepared to win. It’s not just going to happen,” says Ricciardo – who was denied victory here in 2016 by a pit sop error.

“I feel we are where we were at in 2016; we are not the quickest but we can be if we get it all hooked up.”
