Fleetwood backed for major success

After a brilliant fourth place finish at the US Open, bookmakers are backing Englishman Tommy Fleetwood to be winning a major sooner, rather than later.

Fleetwood was never out of the reckoning at Erin Hills, which saw him finish in fourth on 11 under par, five behind winner Brooks Koepka.

26-year-old Fleetwood from Southport, now rises to 21st in the world rankings.

“I’ve never contended for a Major before, so when you get to Saturday and Sunday you’ve got to see how you react and how you feel,” said Fleetwood.

“I felt on Saturday I played great. In the final round my game wasn’t quite there, but still got it round in level par. I scrapped a little bit for it, but I felt fine. I felt comfortable.

“Next time, whenever that comes, I’ll play better and really get myself in contention. I know that inside myself.”

Now bookies certainly feel Fleetwood is a contender. bet365 make him 33/1 to win one of the two remaining majors this year, 10/1 to win by the end of next year and just 2/1 to win one in his career.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Yesterday may have gone but Fleetwood can start thinking about tomorrow and beyond because a Major may soon be here.”
