Garcia beats Rose in play-off to take Masters

Sergio Garcia claimed The Masters, his first major crown, via a play-off as he beat Justin Rose to claim the green jacket at Augusta.

Both players were locked on -9 after 72 holes, which meant they went down the 18th again for a sudden death play-off.

Rose shanked his drive into the trees and could only birdie the hole, which gave Garcia the chance to win his first major and he sunk his birdie put to win his first major at the 74th time of asking.

And to make things extra special, it came on what would have been Seve Ballesteros’s 60th birthday.

The final day at Augusta never really got going with the likes of Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler failing to push the top two.

Garcia had started well but on the back nine, it looked like things were heading Rose’s way, as Garcia bogeyed 10 and 11, before putting his ball into trouble on the 13th – but he scrambled for a par and Rose could only manage the same score, when at one point it looked like he would have a four shot lead going to the 14th, but instead it was just two.

An eagle on 15th saw Garcia level matters before Rose birdied the 16th to re-take the lead by one – but he handed is straight back with a bogey at 17.

Onto the 18th and both had birdie chances. Rose missed the first before Garcia missed a short one to see the tournament go to a play-off.

Some three shots back in third was 2011 winner Charl Schwartzel who finished with an excellent 68.

Tied in fourth on -5 was Belgian Thomas Pieters and Matt Kuchar – who got the crowd going with a brilliant hole in one on the 16th and he finished with the day’s best score of 67.

Fifth place was on -4 was Paul Casey who shot an excellent 68. Sixth place was Kevin Chappell and Rory McIlroy.

Rounding off the top-ten was Ryan Moore and former champion Adam Scott on -2.
