Guardiola backed to lift Champions League

Despite going out of the Champions League on Wednesday, bookmakers are already taking money on Pep Guardiola to lift the trophy with Manchester City.

Claiming European football’s top prize is one of the Spaniard’s main aims but it will have to wait until next year at the earliest following defeat to Monaco.

It was the first time in his career that Guardiola had been knocked out at this stage and he insisted afterwards: “I came here to win the Champions League. I tried, I tried – and I will try again

“Playing like we have done this season, like in the second half, would have been enough.

“The competition is so demanding. Hopefully we are going to learn so that, next season, we can come back here.”

bet365 are listing Guardiola at 8/1 to win the Champions League by the end of his current contract in 2019.

“Guardiola normally guarantees you a semi final berth at least, but the defensive side of things may need a major tweak before he gets competitive again,” said bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth.
