Roy Hodgson has been confirmed as Crystal Palace boss, but he is being tipped to struggle in his first month or so in the job.

The 70-year-old is back in management for this first time since leaving England last year, following their disastrous Euro 2016 campaign.

“We are the club of south London, with an enormously large fan base,” the former Liverpool, Fulham and West Brom boss said,.

“The ambitions here are realistic. In my youth, watching the club from the terraces at the Holmesdale Road end, I had dreams of playing for the team, then as a coach you think about coaching the team and a lot has happened in between times.”

Hodgson, though, faces a tough task to turn pointless and goalless Palace around, with Southampton his opening game on Saturday – after which they face Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Bookmakers have made them 8/11 not to win any of their next four, and 16/1 to not score with bet365.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Frank de Boer has another short tenure, plus Premier League ‘Sack Race’ winner, to add to his CV with Palace turning to the steady hand of Hodgson, although his first four games look a lot tougher than the departing Dutchman’s.”

Hodgson himself is 5/2 not to see out the season at Selhurst Park.
