Manchester United chief Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he wanted to add Alvaro Morata to his squad this summer, and some Bookmakers still think it could happen.
Speaking in America, where United are on a pre-season tour – Mourinho was asked about United’s interest in the Real Madrid forward, who they came close to signing before landing Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
Mourinho could not hide his admiration for Morata when asked.
“It is a shame,” he said of the failed bid for Morata.
“He is a player who made it to the first team with me and I have a special liking for. I enjoyed watching his evolution in Juventus and Madrid.
“But we have not reached an agreement with his club and I don’t think he can end with us.”
You can still get odds on United rekindling their interest in Morata, although Chelsea remain favourites for the player – and they have spoken with Real about a possible deal, as they are in need of a new striker – having missed out on top target Lukaku.
Chelsea are 5/4, big spending AC Milan are 4/1 and United are 9/1.
