Konta backed for final spot

Johanna Konta is rated second favourite behind Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to claim the Wimbledon title.

Britain’s number came through a brilliant quarter-final clash against Romanian Simona Halep to book her place in the last four – the first time a Brit has done that since 1978.

Konta is rated at 5/2, behind Muguruza, because she is deemed to have the harder semi-final as she will come up against Venus Williams. Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, will face Slovakian outside Magdalena Rybarikova.

“What Konta has done at this year’s Wimbledon has been absolutely incredible and the odds suggest that she is not done yet,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.

“She is odds on to make the final, she is only a slight second favourite to win the tournament.”
