Liverpool and Celtic backed to make group stages

Liverpool and Celtic have both learned who they will need to overcome in the Champions League play-offs to make the group stages.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will have to overcome German opposition after being drawn against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim, who like Liverpool, finished fourth in their league.

Celtic – who overcome Rosenborg to make final stage of qualifying – face familiar opponents as they come up against Kazah side Astana, the side they beat at the some point last season when they won 3-2 on aggregate.

The 10 winners from the Champions League play-off stage will join the 22 teams who have already qualified for the group stage, and the losers will move straight into the Europa League.

We spoke to BetVictor about the market around the chances of both Liverpool and Celtic, and the British pair are expected to qualify.

BetVictor’s Head of antepost Football told us: “Celtic will be pleased to have drawn Astana of Kazakhstan in the final round of qualifying in the Champions League as they look to reach the group stages.

“Despite Astana beating Legia Warsaw in the previous round, the Scottish champions are strong favourites at 1/3 to progress and its 9/4 they fail. Celtic have halved in price to 500/1 after winning in Rosenborg on Wednesday and are currently our biggest losers for the competition!

Meanwhile Liverpool remain 20/1 after drawing German side Hoffenheim. We have been keen to keep the Reds onside especially after an eye catching 3-0 win over Bayern Munich recently.

“Hoffenheim will present a tough passage for Pool but they have lost key personnel during the summer and once again we make Liverpool strong favourites at 1/3 to qualify and 9/4 to be eliminated. Hoffenehim have eased to a top priced 250/1 from 150/1 pre draw to lift the trophy.”
