Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in European football history as they overturned a three-goal deficit and beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield.
Braces from Divock Origi and Gino Wijnaldum gave Liverpool the victory, as they managed to keep Lionel Messi and his Barca team-mates silent.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said: “Unbelievable. I don’t think many people gave us a chance. We knew it would be difficult but still possible.
“The belief we have in the changing room is amazing. We knew we could do something special at Anfield. Look at the fans and the lads – this is a special night. This is up there with the best.
“We wanted to start fast. We got an early goal which helped. It wasn’t just the goal, it was getting after them and putting them under pressure. We knew if we showed personality and heart then we’d have a chance.”
Liverpool certainly defied the odds, having been as long as 22/1 to win the Champions League earlier on Tuesday, but they are now 4/9 favourites to lift the title in Spain next month where they will play either Ajax or Tottenham.
bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Liverpool famously have previous when fighting back from 3-0 down in this competition, while Barcelona have recent history in throwing away a first leg three goal lead, but the injuries to Klopp’s side had the hosts drifting to 18/1 to qualify come kick off.
“Jurgen Klopp might win a trophy after all!”
