Chelsea sources have revealed that they have matched Manchester United’s offer for Romelu Lukaku.

The Premier League champions had been in pole position to re-sign Lukaku – but then United cause a huge stir by making a move for the Everton striker, and agreeing an initial £75million deal.

The details have not yet been finalised, which has now allowed Chelsea to come back in and make a rival offer for the player.

Lukaku has said since he rejected a new deal at Everton earlier this year that he would make the decision on his future, and he is now certainly getting his wish.

The 24-year-old is currently in America, where he has been holidaying and training with his friend Paul Pogba, who has unsurprisingly been trying to convince him to join him at Old Trafford. Lukaku has decided against returning to pre-season training with Everton, which has not gone down well at Goodison Park.

Lukaku is due for a medical in Los Angeles, as soon as United get the green-light from Everton and The Red Devils remain confident they will have the player with them in America next week – where they will begin their pre-season tour.

However, Chelsea are now hopeful that Lukaku – who they believe would like to return to Stamford Bridge – could yet opt for a move back to West London.

The tug-of-war over the player is likely to be decided over the weekend.

Bookmakers still firmly believe United are favourites to land the player – BetVictor still rate them at 8/11 to get Lukaku with Chelsea coming into Evens.
