Luke Shaw is being lined up for a move away from Manchester United in January.

The England defender is back to full fitness following a number of injuries in the past 12-months, but Jose Mourinho is clearly unconvinced by him at this moment in time.

However, sources have told me that he is it is understood Mourinho would be willing to let him go on-loan in order to try and kick-start his career with a view to returning to Old Trafford – although that would also depend on if United sign an additional left-back in the mean-time.

Mourinho has tried to give Shaw some hope, and said: “He has a future here but the situation is not easy because he comes from injury after injury after injury he needs two, three, four, five or six matches in a row to play, to make mistakes, to get condition, to get match fitness and I cannot give him that.

“If he was a central midfielder then yes, because we only have two but at left back we have so many options. So the situation is not easy. But he is in the squad, he works and maybe the opportunity comes.”

A number of sides are looking at Shaw as a January target and one of those is his former boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham. Shaw recently admitted that he would like to work for him again and this is a possibility, especially with Danny Rose’s future far from certain.

Sources close to Shaw have told me that up to half-a-dozen Premier League clubs and other in Europe have expressed an interest in doing a deal for the England full-back.

Shaw would ideally like to stay long-term at United – but with no first-team opportunities he is also thinking about his World Cup ambitions, and he knows a loan in January could re-kindle his hopes of making it to Russia.

Despite Shaw struggling to see action at United, Bookmakers believe he is most likely to stay put and is 5/6 to still be with at Old Trafford after the window has closed.

Paddy Power said: “We think that Jose Mourinho is Shaw that he’s seen enough of his young English left back – who must be Luke-ing for a move, given that a right winger and central midfielder gets picked in his position ahead of him.”

We also spoke to United End’s Tom McDermott about his views on Shaw and his future, and told us: “I think the time has come for Luke Shaw to seek a new challenge.

“The game against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup last week was probably the perfect chance to play him. Instead, he had to make do with five minutes at the end, and is in the queue behind Darmian and Young.

“It’s come to the point where you just want to see him back playing and enjoying his football. If he is to fulfil his vast potential then it would appear his best opportunity to do so is away from Old Trafford. A potential deal with Tottenham which would see Danny Rose head in the opposite direction could suit all.”
