National League Play-off final preview – Fylde v Salford

AFC Fylde and Salford City meet in the National League play-off final on Saturday, battling for a place in the Football League.

Neither side have ever played league football before, so history is beckoning for one of teams – with the winner joining Leyton Orient in being promoted.

Big pending Salford finished third in the table, overcoming Eastleigh via a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals.

Salford are co-owned by Manchester United legends the Class of ’92 – Gary Neville, Phil Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs – and they have pumped a lot of money into the club, which has now led them to the brink of league football.

Manager Graham Alexander said: “We’ve both won a lot of games this season. All the clubs at the top end have done that.

“We had two games in the league and beat each other, both away from home. The task is as tough as any we’ll face this season but I know we’ve got the quality to win the game.”

Fylde finished 5th in the table and had to see off Harrogate Town and Solihull Moors to book their place at Wembley.

Their boss Dave Challinor said: “It’s my group of players who are out there working their socks off.

“For us to become a Football League club would be unbelievable.”
