O’Brien the best ever

Is there and has there ever been a better trainer than Aidan O’Brien?

Each year, the softly spoken Irish maestro sends horses around the world and wins the biggest races.

After winning both English Guineas over the past couple of days, no doubt O’Brien will sweep many of this season’s grandest prizes, like he has done for many years.

O’Brien, like his great namesake Vincent (no relation), seems to do things that others can only dream of doing.

It’s a near impossible task to define which trainer is the greatest. It’s a bit like comparing amazing cars.

What was epic in the 60s, wouldn’t even get put in to production now. You can only compare against their own era – and Aidan O’Brien is simply the best.

I would be a little surprised if the Guineas’ winners, Churchill and Winter, remain unbeaten this season. There was enough of a challenge in behind them to suggest they may not have things all their own way.

For Churchill the plan could be the Derby. Colts from the Ballydoyle/Coolmore operation are raced with an eye to their breeding potential as a stallion.

If Churchill can win at a mile and a half, then the son of Galileo will be worth far more in stud fees. I’m still not convinced he is the second coming.

Nor do I think Winter will have it all her own way this term. Horses like Rhododendron could well reverse the form. It was an exciting weekend, yes – am I convinced either Guineas winners will be legends? Put me down in the undecided camp.
